Vilcún between Mapuche weaving and volcanic landscapes
Accommodation in Vilcún
Vilcún brings together culture around the Plaza de Armas, Mapuche weaving in rural Llamuco, and volcanic formations across the municipality. Parts of Conguillío National Park are also within the municipality; however, the park extends across several municipalities. The range of experiences spans local festivals and geological landscapes. For planning your trip, it helps to decide which of these experiences you want to focus on: the Plaza, Llamuco, and the park are distinct locations.
Culture, crafts, and festivals
The Expo Lanas is held every year in Vilcún’s Plaza de Armas and brings together more than 30 entrepreneurs. Rural traditions and crafts shape the event. It also recognizes the contribution of rural women to preserving Mapuche textile traditions and local identity. The Kütralkura Festival takes place annually in the municipality of Vilcún. At its fourth edition, held in the Plaza de Armas, the 2024 program included outdoor activities, interactive exhibits, local product sales, and live music.
The Festival de las Aves is also part of the municipality’s events calendar and takes place every year in November. Its activities include guided outings, educational programs, and gatherings with school groups and families. Those interested in weaving and local traditions will find a different focus in the rural sector of Llamuco: along the Ruta del Telar, craftswomen welcome visitors into their rukas, where they share the history and traditions of weaving, a craft passed down through generations.
In Llamuco Bajo, Pulil Domo offers Mapuche woven goods such as blankets, table runners, and placemats. Its culinary offerings include Mapuche dishes such as chicken casserole, tortilla, muday, and catuto. The textiles and food offer a direct glimpse of local crafts and cuisine; confirm current visiting and participation arrangements directly.
Volcanic landscapes and national park offerings
Laguna Amarilla is a small volcanic lake at the foot of a massif of igneous rock formed from ancient lava flows from Llaima Volcano. More recent lava flows blocked water at a fissure extending from the volcano’s slope, forming the lake. Georoute 3, Los Paraguas del Volcán Llaima, features a roughly five-meter-high solidified lava cascade on the slope of Llaima. It was formed by a descending lava flow. Salto Lan Lan waterfall is 26 meters high and lies on top of three ancient lava flows from the volcano.
Another natural area is Sendero El Ermitaño, a remnant of native forest. There, visitors can observe birds, flora, and fungi with guides and specialists. The geological formations and forest observation appeal to different interests: one focuses on how the landscape was formed, while the other highlights the diversity of the forest.
The western entrance to Conguillío National Park runs from Temuco via Cajón, Vilcún, and Cherquenco to the Los Paraguas sector. In the area within Vilcún municipality, the park offers food sales and kayak and boat rentals in summer. Cabins, campsites, and picnic areas remain open until mid-autumn, depending on the weather. Check the current availability of these seasonal offerings before your trip.
Choosing the right location for your stay
Your preferred focus is a helpful starting point when looking for a vacation rental: events at the Plaza, weaving traditions in rural Llamuco, or seasonal offerings in the national park, which spans several municipalities, correspond to different locations. This can help you plan your stay in Vilcún and the different areas of the municipality more effectively.
Getting oriented locally
Vilcún’s Tourism Department gathers and shares information about tourism services and attractions, both digitally and in person. Its office is at Miraflores 403 in Vilcún; check the current contact options before your trip.
