Calama combines insights into the region’s cultural history with nature experiences along the Río Loa. Parque El Loa features a replica church and life-size dinosaur figures; museums focus on fossil marine animals, butterflies and wildlife today. The river also offers viewpoints and recreation projects. These varied themes can help you decide which experiences you would like to shape your trip to Calama.

Architecture and Dinosaurs at Parque El Loa

Parque El Loa features a replica of the San Francisco de Chiu Chiu church. It was restored to preserve traditional building methods from the Andean sector of El Loa Province. Visitors therefore encounter not the original building but a replica whose restoration draws attention to regional construction techniques.

The Titanes Es-Culturales trail presents a different theme: it includes life-size sculptures of the Atacamatitan and a pterosaur, as well as other dinosaur installations. The Atacamatitan is described there as the first sauropod discovered in Chile. The large figures offer a vivid prehistoric counterpoint to historic building methods and present-day nature. If you are travelling with children, you can use these subjects as shared topics for discovery and conversation.

Fossils, Butterflies and Wildlife Today

The Museo de Historia Natural y Cultural del Desierto de Atacama presents various aspects of natural history through its exhibitions. Maravillas de la Naturaleza features around 200 species of butterflies, beetles and other natural curiosities from Chile and abroad. This is an approximate figure; the focus is on different forms and examples from nature.

Paleontología Mesozoico focuses on fossils of Jurassic marine animals. The animals on display include ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and marine crocodiles. This exhibition turns the spotlight on life in the sea during a distant period in Earth’s history. Fauna y Ecosistemas Andinos complements the theme with a selection of around 60 species of present-day wildlife. Together, the exhibitions offer different perspectives, from fossil marine animals and natural curiosities to species found today.

Birdlife and Recreation along the Río Loa

Nature observation is also part of the Parque El Loa ecosystem and of Calama’s character. Native trees and shrubs grow there, and local animal species include great egrets, Huairavo and Pato Jergón. The municipality also organised an educational Tour de Flora y Fauna along the Río Loa through Parque El Loa. The Circuito de Fauna Silvestre del Río Loa aims to promote both tourism and ecosystem conservation in Calama and its surrounding area.

Mirador Borde Río is an extension of this circuit and aims to introduce the public to the birdlife along the river. Paseo Borde Río is a separate project: a recreational area on the riverbank in Calama, stretching over 1.2 kilometres and featuring an illuminated suspension bridge. The area has been described as a green recreational zone with lush vegetation. A viewpoint on the Río Loa offers a chance to observe birds found there, including Andean coots, Chincol, Huairavo, blue herons and Pato Jergón Chico.

Discover the City’s Cultural History

Another insight into the archaeological heritage comes from tours of the laboratory and archaeological depot of the Corporación de Cultura y Turismo de Calama. Free tours were set up for the public; the facilities are located in the Parque El Loa area. The Calama Ruta Patrimonial y Turística experience, in turn, was launched to highlight the cultural heritage of nine historic shops in the city. To take part, visitors receive a pass at the tourist information centre, and each shop stamps it in connection with a purchase.

This lets you choose destinations that match your interests without combining the different experiences into a single outing.
