General Carrera Province
Accommodation in General Carrera Province
Lake General Carrera defines General Carrera Province: the province lies around the basin of the lake of the same name and stretches from the Argentine border in the east to San Rafael National Park in the west. At 1,850 km², the lake is Chile’s largest and one of the most important landmarks along the Carretera Austral. Its glacial, turquoise waters and the Marble Caves within them give the region a distinctive character.
Lake, Marble Formations and Patagonia
If you want to experience the lake and its formations, be sure to plan a tour of the Marble Caves: a guided tour is essential, and it must be booked in advance. Boat and kayak trips to the Catedrales de Mármol, designated a nature sanctuary, are also offered from Puerto Río Tranquilo. Through the Valle Exploradores, Puerto Río Tranquilo is also one of the main gateways to Laguna San Rafael National Park and the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. These different destinations offer several ways to focus your holiday plans: a trip on the lake, the Marble formations or the Patagonian landscape.
The roads also shape the regional overview. The paved Ruta 265 connects Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez with Chile Chico and runs along the shores of Lake General Carrera. The also-paved Paso Jeinimeni connects Chile Chico with Los Antiguos in Argentina. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider which places and experiences you want to focus your trip on, rather than treating the province as a single base.
Hiking Trails and Landscape Experiences
The Escorial El Silencio hiking trail is in the Jeinimeni sector of Patagonia National Park. It is 2.6 km long, takes about an hour in total and is considered easy. This makes it easy to fit a specific hike into your day’s plans without committing to a long trail. In the same sector, a 300 m paved path with railings and edging provides access to Lake Jeinimeni.
Patagonia National Park is located in General Carrera and Capitán Prat provinces and includes the municipalities of Chile Chico and Cochrane. Cerro Piramide offers another way to take in the landscape: the mountain is 1,743 m high and almost pyramid-shaped. Its trail offers panoramic views of Lake General Carrera and the Río Ibáñez valley. At Glaciar Exploradores, a trail leads to a viewpoint from which you can see the Patagonian ice fields. If you would rather include waterscapes and wildlife watching in your day, the urban wetland Humedal Urbano Vientos del Chelenko is a recommended spot for birdwatching.
Near Puerto Río Tranquilo, Ruta X-728 runs through the Valle Exploradores, 87 km west of the town. The route is surrounded by forests, rivers, dozens of waterfalls, hanging glaciers and snow-capped peaks. A full-day boat trip to Laguna San Rafael, organised by tour companies, also departs from Bahía Exploradores. These trips are quite different from the shorter trails in the Jeinimeni sector and offer other considerations when choosing a destination within the province.
Local Life, Crafts and Regional Produce
In Chile Chico, the Cementerio Viejo, also known as Cementerio Antiguo, recalls the settlement of the southeastern shore of Lake General Carrera in the early 20th century. It contains the oldest recorded grave: dating from 1934, it belongs to Cantalicio Jara. Chile Chico’s Plaza hosts the annual Fiesta de la Cosecha Comunitaria, a community cherry and apricot harvest festival. The town’s history and harvest festival offer a cultural and culinary dimension alongside the lake and nature parks.
Puerto Ibáñez is known for the locally distinctive Cacharrito and for wool and leather crafts made by women artisans. Around the town are local chacras, where the microclimate makes it possible to grow fresh vegetables and fruit for jams and liqueurs. Puerto Ibáñez’s waterfront promenade can be explored on foot; in summer, you can swim along the lake’s shores. Nearby are also the Saltos del Río Ibáñez, a waterfall that formed after the last eruption of the Hudson volcano.
These different interests may help you decide which holiday rental to choose: should your trip focus mainly on lake experiences, hiking trails, scenery or local culture? The province’s subordinate localities include Puerto Guadal, Chile Chico and Río Ibáñez.
