Tulun: Hills, Wetlands and Beach
Accommodation in Tulun
Tulun Community is partly urbanized and lies on hills around marshy terrain. The area therefore combines a settled character with a distinctive landscape. If you are looking for a holiday rental, this mix can serve as an initial guide when choosing a destination: does a partly urbanized setting with hills and marshy terrain suit the vacation you are planning?
On public holidays, people from the surrounding communities come to Tulun Community to relax at the beach. This adds another dimension to the description of the landscape. Your decision therefore involves both the hilly, marshy surroundings and beach recreation on public holidays—two specific aspects to consider when weighing up Tulun’s character.
Northern: Nature Conservation, Mountains and Culture
The wider destination of Northern offers other nature and culture-related attractions. Mamunta Mayosso Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Tonkolili District and is one of the few areas in Sierra Leone that protects the endangered dwarf crocodile. Despite its small size, the sanctuary is home to a reported 252 bird species. This brings together a specific focus on species conservation and a high number of bird species.
The Wara Wara Mountains are in Koinadugu District, immediately northwest of Kabala. The landscape is shaped by rugged hills rising to 1,000 metres. The emphasis differs from that of Mamunta Mayosso Sanctuary: at Wara Wara, the terrain and elevation are to the fore, while the sanctuary focuses on protecting the dwarf crocodile and its bird species.
The Loma Mountains are also in Koinadugu District. They contain diverse wildlife habitats, including habitats for pygmy hippos and viviparous toads. Loma therefore adds a distinct natural aspect to the mountain landscape: Wara Wara is defined by its rugged heights, while Loma is notable for habitats for the animal species mentioned.
Lake Sonfon, in Diang Chiefdom in Koinadugu District, is considered a place associated with traditional beliefs and local cultural ceremonies. This gives it a different regional focus from the mountains and the wildlife sanctuary. An IBA survey recorded 115 bird species at the lake and in the surrounding vegetation in 1994. This figure comes from that historical survey and is not a current population count.
In the wider destination of Northern, boat races are common on the islands of Yanlensun, Mabakeh, Bombali and Kerefey in Kaffu Bullom Chiefdom. This is a different cultural focus from Tulun’s public-holiday beach visits: one is about recreation, the other about racing.
You can make your decision on two levels: Tulun as a specific place with its settlement, landscape and beach use on public holidays, or Northern as a regional setting with a wildlife sanctuary, mountains and cultural sites. When you start looking for a holiday rental, first decide which level best describes your travel interests.
