Porto Alegre combines a significant plantation history with river experiences and seasonal wildlife watching. The Porto Alegre plantation was the second-largest estate in the south of São Tomé Island. A two-hour canoe trip on the Malanza River, whale watching off the southern coast and guided turtle watching near Jalé Beach offer different experiences. When planning your trip, you can decide whether history, a specific activity or wildlife watching should shape your stay.

Plantation history and traces of the past

The plantation was founded by Jacinto Carneiro de Sousa e Almeida, Viscount of Malanza and son of the Baron of Água Izé. The plantation included six outbuildings, one of which was on Ilhéu das Rolas. The surrounding area of Porto Alegre also contains the ruins of former cocoa and coffee plantations. The area’s history therefore extends beyond a single estate: it encompasses both the plantation’s former scale and other traces of cocoa and coffee cultivation in the area.

The Equator Monument is located on Ilhéu das Rolas, near Porto Alegre. Navigator Gago Coutinho built it in 1936; its polychrome base features a planisphere. A planisphere is a representation of the world on a flat surface. Here, it forms part of the monument’s design, adding a striking detail to its specific date of construction. Two different historical themes therefore come together on Ilhéu das Rolas: its connection to the plantation and the monument with its named creator.

River trip and seasonal wildlife watching

The two-hour canoe trip on the Malanza River starts at the bridge over the river in Porto Alegre. From September to December, whales pass along the southern coast; organised whale-watching trips are available from Porto Alegre or Ilhéu das Rolas. Near Porto Alegre is Jalé Beach, an important nesting beach for sea turtles and a destination for guided watching tours. The nesting season runs from September to April.

The two wildlife-watching seasons overlap from September to December. If you’d like to plan your travel dates around both, you can use this shared period as a guide. Check local availability in advance for organised whale-watching trips and guided turtle tours. It’s also best to confirm the arrangements for the canoe trip before your journey.

Porto Alegre as a base for your trip

Porto Alegre is the southern terminus of the main road that runs along the eastern side of São Tomé Island. Its location provides a point of reference on the island and is a practical factor when choosing where to stay. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Porto Alegre, you can match this location to your travel interests: history, an activity with a specified duration, or seasonal wildlife watching can each be the focus of your stay.

For families, the different planning rhythms may also matter: the canoe trip has a set duration of two hours, while wildlife watching depends on the respective seasons. You can plan your stay around whether you’d like to focus on an activity with a clearly defined duration or nature experiences available at a particular time of year.
