Los Cobanos: Coastal Character and Marine Life
Accommodation in Los Cobanos
Los Cobanos is a small fishing community on the coast of the Department of Sonsonate. The coast and marine life give the area a distinct natural character: nearby Playa Los Almendros has generous shade from almond trees. This beach’s protected coastal and marine ecosystem includes seabirds, crabs, and mollusks; sea turtles nest in the beach’s sand.
Coastal Character and Nature near Los Cobanos
The coastal themes have two distinct points of reference: the small fishing community defines the area, while nearby Playa Los Almendros—with its almond trees, protected ecosystem, and turtle nesting sites—offers a specific nature theme. This brings the character of the community and the beach’s ecology together in the surrounding area.
Sonsonate: Culture, Nature, and History
The wider Sonsonate travel area also offers religious traditions, historical themes, and other nature and activity experiences. Semana Santa in Sonsonate is considered an occasion for religious tourism. In 2013, the Legislative Assembly declared Semana Santa Sonsonateca part of the country’s religious cultural heritage. During Semana Santa, the Catedral Santísima Trinidad de Sonsonate is a gathering place for worshippers attending the processions of the Nazareno and the Santo Entierro.
In Nahuizalco, the Museo Conmemorativo Náhuatl Pipil is described as one of the town’s most visited attractions. The Plaza Ferroviaria in Sonsonate is dedicated to the railway’s former importance as a means of transportation in the city. Its theme is thus clearly distinct from the religious focus of Semana Santa.
The surrounding reef near Los Cobanos is also a coastal feature of the wider Sonsonate travel area. It acts as a kind of breakwater, creating a large area of enclosed water; surfing is not very common there. The regional perspective thus extends from religious and historical themes to coastal landscapes and marine nature.
More Regional Experiences

The pools are explicitly differentiated by target group, while the Temazcal explores a different, cultural theme.
You can climb or rappel at several of the waterfalls at Las Siete Cascadas near Juayúa. The Pupusódromo in Izalco offers a different connection between culture and everyday life: it is associated with Indigenous history and culture and is known for the traditional preparation of pupusas on a comal. The wider Sonsonate travel area thus offers both active nature experiences and culinary and cultural themes.
