El Majahual: A Coastal Landscape of Contrasts

The coastal community of El Majahual is located at Playa El Majahual in the municipality of Puerto de La Libertad, La Libertad Department, El Salvador. Turquoise water, dark sand, and gentle waves define the beach. Together, these features create a distinctive coastal profile: the dark sand stands out against the turquoise water, while the surf is calm.

The beach is also associated with a historical event: before Semana Santa 2021, a beach cleanup took place at Playa El Majahual in the broader destination of La Libertad. It was part of the “No seamos basura” campaign, with the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, the Ministerio de Turismo, and CORSATUR taking part.

The water color, sand, and waves offer concrete points of reference for considering whether this coastal profile suits your travel plans.

La Libertad as a Broader Destination

The broader destination of La Libertad also encompasses archaeological themes. Joya de Cerén preserves the remains of a pre-Hispanic farming village that was buried by a volcanic eruption in the 7th century AD. Alongside the coastal landscape, the traces of a settlement and its history therefore offer a distinct area of interest.

Another highlight in the broader destination of La Libertad is Parque de Aventuras Surf City Walter Thilo Deininger, which was declared a protected area in 2020. Guided tours with specialized guides start at the Mirador al Pacífico trail; you should confirm the current arrangements for these tours with the park. The park also includes the Ruta de la Mariposa and Camino a la Aventura trails. Madre Cacao is designated exclusively for mountain biking and trail running. Trail availability and conditions may change.

The park’s activities include a 270-meter-long zip line at a height of 30 meters, rappelling, and a via ferrata. There are also sensory play activities for children ages 0 to 5, as well as picnic and camping areas. Since activities and facilities may vary in current availability, check with the operator in advance.

A Different Coastal Highlight: El Zonte

El Zonte is considered one of El Salvador’s best-known surf destinations. The small coastal community is located at kilometer 53 of the Litoral Highway in the municipality of Chiltiupán, La Libertad. Two black volcanic sand beaches are separated by a river and its small estuary. Several surf breaks define the area; the most popular is a rocky right-hand point break with fast, long, and occasionally tube-shaped waves that can reach up to 10 feet (3.5 meters). Surf conditions depend on the swell and weather.

The beach profiles are clearly different: gentle waves are a feature of Playa El Majahual, while El Zonte is defined by its surf breaks and powerful waves. This comparison can help you sort out your coastal interests without treating the two places as the same.
