Rulindo combines a striking hilly landscape with historical traditions. Valleys, marshes and rivers shape the district’s scenery; several named places are associated with royal families and rulers. When choosing a holiday rental in Rulindo, you can first consider what you would like to define your stay: the landscape or the stories associated with particular places.

Hills, Valleys and Waterways

The hills of Tare, Tumba and Cyungo in Rulindo District reach an altitude of 2,438 m. Valleys and marshes lie between the hills, bordering rivers such as the Nyabarongo, Muyanza and Nyabugogo. Ridges, wet lowlands and rivers thus form distinct, interconnected elements of the landscape.

In the wider regional area, eight marshes, including Rugezi, feed Lake Burera. The lake, in turn, supplies water to the Ntaruka Waterfalls in Burera District; the waterfalls serve as a source of hydropower. This connection extends beyond Rulindo and offers a glimpse into the region’s broader water systems.

Places with Royal Traditions

Mubigabiro by’Abami is a tourist site in Burega Sector, within Butangampundu Cell, in Rulindo District. The site is associated with royal families and queens. The names mentioned include King Kilima Rugwe, Ruganzu Ndoli, Queen Nyirakigeli IV Murorunkwere and Cendeli. This association makes Mubigabiro a distinct historical focus among Rulindo’s local stories.

Akavure ka Ngiramazi is a rock in Mbogo Sector. It is associated with King Ruganzu Ndoli’s search for water for his army and is shaped like an Akavure. Here, the shape of the rock and the traditional account of a search for water go hand in hand: a natural formation linked to a specific historical story.

Igiti cy’umwifuzo also points to a person from history: the site is in Ntarabana Sector and was planted by Rwabugiri. Ikirenge Cya Ruganzu is a historical tourist site in Rulindo District. It includes a rock that is believed to bear the footprint of King Ruganzu; impressions of his toes and heel are also attributed to the rock.

More to Explore in Northern Province

Beyond Rulindo, the wider destination of Northern Province offers its own natural and historical themes. Northern Province has 52 caves with a total of 15.2 km of passages; most caves formed in Cenozoic volcanic rock. Musanze Cave is 2 km long. For many centuries, it served as a refuge during times of war and was the site of a massacre during the genocide.

The Rwanda Liberation Museum, also known as Umulindi w'Intwari, offers a different historical perspective. It is located in Gicumbi District in Northern Province and tells the story of the liberation struggle of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF Inkotanyi). These regional themes are distinct from Rulindo’s natural and cultural heritage, but broaden the picture of Northern Province.

This question can help you decide what kind of stay you want before choosing a holiday rental.
