Kigali brings together a wide range of travel experiences: Nyandungu Eco-Park is home to a restored urban wetland and its diverse natural environment; museums and cultural venues focus on art, markets and Rwanda’s history. An outdoor recreation centre and a golf course are also among the options described. This means you can choose what to see in Kigali based on the themes you want to shape your trip.

Experience nature at Nyandungu Eco-Park

Nyandungu Eco-Park is Kigali’s first restored urban wetland. It covers 121 hectares and is known for its diverse flora and fauna. This gives the park its own nature-focused appeal within the destination, distinct from the city’s cultural and historical themes.

Visitors can walk and cycle along the paths, and there are also places to picnic in the park. Those interested in birdlife can observe and learn about more than 100 bird species there. These activities combine exercise with observing nature, without limiting a visit to just one way of exploring.

The park’s facilities include viewpoints, picnic areas, an information centre and a restaurant. The viewpoints and paths offer a different experience from the areas where visitors can relax. The park therefore reveals several aspects of a wetland: its landscape, wildlife and plant life, and opportunities to spend time outdoors.

Art, market life and events

At Inema Arts Center, artists in residence have space to develop their creative talents. This is one distinct aspect of Kigali’s cultural scene: the centre is associated with artistic work and development. Kigali Cultural Village, by contrast, focuses on exchange and market activity. It is a traditional marketplace where local artisans and food vendors display and sell their goods.

Kigali Cultural Village also hosts events, workshops, festivals and music. This does not imply a specific schedule or that these offerings take place regularly. For planning your trip, it is more useful to distinguish between the themes: Cultural Village is both a place for goods from local vendors and for cultural activities, while Inema Arts Center gives artists in residence space to work.

BK Arena is a multipurpose venue for indoor sports events, concerts and festivals. It adds an event venue to the city’s cultural attractions, hosting a range of event types. Together, these places give an impression of the different ways art, market life and events are represented in Kigali.

Memorial sites and colonial history

The Kandt House Museum devotes its largest section to the experiences of people in Rwanda during the colonial period. It focuses in particular on German rule from 1884, the colonial administration and the First World War up to 1916. Richard Kandt’s life and work in Rwanda are also among the topics covered. The period covered thus runs from the start of German rule in 1884 to the end of the period described in 1916.

The Campaign Against Genocide Museum is located in the parliament building in Kigali. It describes how the RPF/A campaign against the genocide was carried out. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi. These sites have different focuses: Kandt House Museum explores the colonial period, the Campaign Against Genocide Museum focuses on the campaign against the genocide, and the Memorial commemorates the victims.

More excursions and planning the right trip

For another outdoor option, Fazenda Sengha, an outdoor recreation centre, is located on Mount Kigali in Nyamirambo, Kigali. Kigali Golf Resort and Villas has an 18-hole golf course in the centre of Rwanda’s capital. Both options differ considerably from the museum and nature themes: here, the focus is on a recreation centre and a golf course. You can take these interests into account in your trip planning alongside art, history and nature.

If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Kigali, the focus of your stay can be a good starting point for choosing one. Nature watching, hiking and cycling appeal to different interests than museums, memorial sites or events. Market life, outdoor recreation and golf are also distinct themes. So first consider which of these sides of Kigali matter most to your trip.
