On Sint Eustatius, open grasslands, forest, coastline and places rich in history come together. If you want to combine nature and culture, you can choose from viewpoints, hiking trails, the sea and historic sites to shape your stay. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to consider which of these experiences you want to define your visit.

Landscapes from grassland to rainforest

In Boven National Park, cacti and acacias cover rocky outcrops and open grassland. Mazinga Peak is the highest point on Sint Eustatius and offers panoramic views of the island. The views and vegetation provide two different perspectives on the island’s landscape.

In Quill National Park, too, hiking trails pass through different vegetation zones: dry semi-deciduous woodland, the elfin forest along the crater rim and tropical rainforest below. Nature enthusiasts will find a different succession of landscapes here than in the open grassland of Boven National Park. Sint Eustatius’s wildlife includes nesting seabirds and native forest species; sightings are not guaranteed.

Coast and marine conservation

Gallows Bay is a specific point of reference for snorkelling: snorkelling there is free. At all dive and snorkelling sites, you must be accompanied by a dive centre. The dive areas of Sint Eustatius extend for 27 kilometres along the coast.

The St. Eustatius National Marine Park was established in 1996. It contains two reserves, one in the north and one in the south, where fishing and anchoring are prohibited. One species of sea turtle is observed most frequently in the park, though sightings may vary seasonally. If you plan activities at sea, take the required accompaniment into account and check the local rules for the reserves.

Hiking trails with varied experiences

The Venus Bay Trail first climbs to the Gilboa Ridges and then descends through mostly dry tropical forest to Venus Bay. The trail ends there at a picnic table. Venus Bay is located on Sint Eustatius in Boven National Park. Before your visit, check locally whether the trail is currently accessible.

Several hiking trails on Sint Eustatius pass old stone walls; historic military batteries can also be found along a number of trails. So, hikes can offer glimpses of the landscape as well as traces of the island’s history. The examples mentioned differ in focus: the Venus Bay Trail is described by its route and vegetation, while the walls and batteries are historic features along other trails.

Historic sites on Sint Eustatius

Fort Oranje is a historic landmark associated with Sint Eustatius’s significant role in Caribbean and international history. The ruins of Lower Town also recall this historical significance. In Lower Town Oranjestad, visitors can walk among ruins, including old warehouses, stone ovens and brick buildings. Erosion and hurricanes have affected the site; conditions there may change.

The St. Eustatius Historical Foundation was established in 1974. Together with the historic landmarks and ruins, this date offers another point of reference if you want to shape your stay around the island’s history as well.

Choosing the right focus for your holiday rental

Your trip can focus mainly on hiking and nature, snorkelling and diving, or historic sites. These interests offer a practical guide when deciding where to stay: first consider which experiences matter most to you, then compare the locations you are considering for your holiday rental against that focus. This way, your search begins with the kind of Sint Eustatius you want to discover.
