Ursulo Galván: Cempoala and local history

Ursulo Galván offers two distinct historical perspectives: the history of today’s municipal seat and that of the archaeological settlement of Cempoala in the same municipality. Cempoala represents the heritage of the Totonacs; the town’s history leads back to its former name, San Carlos. Cempoala: Totonac history and buildings

Cempoala, located in the municipality of Ursulo Galván, was one of the most important Totonac settlements during the Postclassic period, from 900 to 1521 AD. This role provides historical context for its buildings: they represent not only individual architectural forms, but also the settlement’s importance in that era.

The buildings include the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Main Temple, and the Templo de las Chimeneas. The Temple of the Wind God Ehécatl is distinguished by its circular ground plan. The Caritas structure has two stories and is decorated with stucco skulls. The hydraulic network, which brought water from the Río Actopan, also known as the Chachalacas, into the city offers another perspective on its history. The temples, distinctive architectural features, and water system thus provide different ways to explore Cempoala.

Museo de Sitio de Cempoala: collection and visit planning

The Museo de Sitio de Cempoala has four permanent exhibition rooms featuring archaeological objects. The collection includes ceramics, objects made of stone and bone, stucco, fragments of wall paintings, clay figures, depictions of deities associated with the Totonac cult of the dead, and architectural elements from Cempoala. The collection also includes masonry remains, wall paintings, figures, statues of people and animals, and everyday objects. Together, these objects offer insight into different aspects of Totonac culture.

Museum admission is included in the admission price for the archaeological zone. As admission rules may change, check them before your visit. Workshops and guided tours are offered to student groups upon prior written request. This restriction is important when planning group visits; it applies specifically to student groups and requires an advance request.

Local history and the Fiesta de San Carlos

Today’s municipal seat also has its own history of names. San Carlos de Chachalacas is considered the historical predecessor of the municipal seat. San Carlos was elevated to the status of a villa; the municipal seat was named Úrsulo Galván in honor of the prominent agricultural leader from Veracruz. Alongside Cempoala’s archaeological history, the development of the town’s name and the history of the present-day seat are therefore distinct subjects to explore.

The Fiesta de San Carlos features masses, processions, and fireworks. The festivities also include a fair with rides, as well as games of chance and skill. River trips are offered in the coastal zone where the Río Actopan flows into the sea. This is a different focus from Cempoala’s buildings and collections: here, the emphasis is on an activity on the water.
