Aldama: Cenotes, Waterfall and Excursions
Accommodation in Aldama
Aldama combines impressive waterscapes with nature and cultural experiences. The Cenotes de Aldama are particularly distinctive: the system consists of five bodies of water named El Zacatón, Baños, Murciélagos, Poza Verde and Alameda. Four cenotes described in the municipal plan are connected by an underground river that runs just a few metres below the surface. This means that, alongside the visible pools, the cenotes’ distinctive geological connections are also a focus.
Cenotes of Different Sizes
El Zacatón is an open cenote approximately 140 metres in diameter and 335 metres deep. Poza Verde measures 150 metres in diameter and is approximately 200 metres deep. The dimensions of La Pilita and La Azufrosa also reveal their different shapes: La Pilita is 30 metres in diameter, with an explored depth of approximately 100 metres. La Azufrosa is 12 metres in diameter and has a conical bottom.
The cenotes are located on private property, and a group is responsible for monitoring the area. Take this property situation into account when planning your excursion. You can reach the Cenotes de Aldama via the municipality of Las Palmas. From there, the drive takes 20 to 30 minutes in a north-easterly direction.
Waterfall, Boat Trips and Nature Watching
El Salto is a waterfall on the Río Carrizal. Swimming and rappelling are possible there—two different ways to experience the waterfall area. If you would rather focus on a trip on the water or nature experiences during your holiday, Barra de Morón offers boat trips and nature experiences. Sport fishing and birdwatching are possible at Playa del Sol in the town of Barra del Tordo. This gives you different ways to shape your trip: around the waterfall, a boat trip or birdwatching.
Distance information also helps you distinguish between excursions by how you get there. From Aldama, Playa Rancho Nuevo can be reached via 25 kilometres of paved road and a further 18 kilometres of unpaved road. Playa Barra del Tordo is 42 kilometres from the municipal seat of Aldama; the drive takes approximately 40 minutes.
In March 2025, the municipality of Aldama began repair work at Playa del Sol. The aim was to welcome visitors in improved conditions during the holiday period.
Regional History and Choosing Your Accommodation
The Museo Regional de Arqueología e Historia belongs to the municipal government (Ayuntamiento). It opened on 6 May 2000 and displays a historical collection as well as archaeological pieces from the region. South-east of Aldama, in La Ceiba near Morón, there is also a group of hills where monoliths have been found. These places add a historical and archaeological perspective on the region to its nature experiences.
When looking for a holiday rental in Aldama, you can first consider what kind of excursion you would like to focus on during your stay: cenotes, a waterfall, boat trips, birdwatching or regional history. You can also factor the travel distances to individual destinations into your plans. This way, you can choose accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most during your trip.
