Huimanguillo combines impressive archaeological sites with the landscapes of AguaSelva. At La Venta, you can explore Olmec history, while Malpasito offers insights into the distinctive Zoque culture. If you prefer the outdoors, AguaSelva has hills, rivers and waterfalls to discover. This lets you tailor your trip to your group’s interests: early cultures, nature experiences or a mix of both.

Olmec History at La Venta

La Venta was a city of outstanding importance in ancient Mexico from 1200 to 400 BCE, and is located in Huimanguillo, in the state of Tabasco. The Museo de Sitio de La Venta introduces visitors to the Olmec civilization from 1500 to 400 BCE. It is the only museum in the Olmec region of the Gulf Coast. The exhibition features more than 200 archaeological artifacts, as well as maps, timelines, dioramas and architectural models. Its varied displays make the museum interesting for visitors who want to view historical objects or learn about the civilization through visual exhibits.

The site’s structures and finds also give a tangible impression of La Venta. Complex D comprises 20 rammed-earth structures. They are arranged along three north–south axes that form a kind of avenue. Monumental monoliths found at Building D-7, weighing between 14 and 35 tons, are on display in the site museum. This allows visitors to consider archaeological architecture and monumental finds as part of their exploration of La Venta.

Malpasito and the Zoque Culture

Malpasito is an archaeological site characteristic of the Zoque culture. This tradition was neighboring to the Olmec and Maya cultural traditions, but remained distinct from both. Malpasito therefore offers a different cultural focus from La Venta. Its monumental area covers 14 hectares and includes 53 structures. Families can choose how to balance the two destinations according to their interests: La Venta offers an introduction to Olmec civilization, while Malpasito showcases a distinct cultural tradition.

Malpasito is listed as open Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00. The Museo de Sitio de La Venta is listed as open Monday to Sunday, 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00. These details can help you plan when to visit.

AguaSelva: Hills, Rivers and Waterfalls

AguaSelva is located in Huimanguillo, among the hills of Mono Pelado, La Pava and La Copa. Waterfalls and rivers shape the landscape. Cerro de la Pava is 850 meters high and has more than 100 waterfalls. Here, the focus of a trip shifts noticeably: instead of archaeological sites, the landscape and outdoor activities take center stage.

The AguaSelva region is suitable for hiking and mountaineering. In Villa Guadalupe, ecotourism activities such as hiking, rappelling and birdwatching are offered. These nature experiences provide a contrast to sightseeing at La Venta and Malpasito.

Other Aspects of the Municipality

The waterways are also part of Huimanguillo’s character. The Mezcalapa River comes from the state of Chiapas, crosses the eastern side of the municipality and runs near the municipal seat. Laguna del Rosario is Huimanguillo’s most important lagoon. Local crafts include baskets made from palm and vines. Together with the archaeological sites and AguaSelva, these details show different sides of the destination, so a trip need not be limited to just one theme.

Huimanguillo is part of the Olmeca-Zoque tourist route, which leads to the archaeological zones of La Venta and Malpasito. From Villahermosa, you can reach La Venta via Highway 180 toward Coatzacoalcos; the exit to Villa La Venta is at kilometer 128. When looking for a vacation rental in Huimanguillo, you can first consider what you want your trip to focus on: archaeological discoveries, the landscapes and activities of AguaSelva, or a combination of these interests.
