Beaches, Tides, and Calm Waters

The beaches of Hermosa, Bonita, El Mirador, and Playa de Oro are considered suitable for windsurfing because of their moderate waves. They are also considered suitable for snorkeling. This means the same four beaches offer two different possibilities: getting out on the water or exploring the underwater world. When choosing your destination, you can weigh these beach activities against nature experiences in the desert.

At low tide, Bahía La Choya reveals small natural tidal pools where you can explore marine life. The tide level is key to this experience. The bay’s calm waters also make kayaking another way to explore the surroundings from the water. Families can choose between beach activities, exploring the pools, and a kayaking trip, depending on their interests.

Desert Landscapes and Insights into Nature and Culture

The El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve extends across the municipalities of Puerto Peñasco, Plutarco Elías Calles, and San Luis Río Colorado in the state of Sonora. The Schuk Toak Visitor Center and Museum provides information about the reserve’s biodiversity, geology, and culture. As well as desert landscapes, you can learn about the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

A 5-kilometer out-and-back dune trail starts at the Schuk Toak Visitor Center and Museum. The trail is closed during the summer months because of high temperatures. This is important when planning your trip: the trail is not an option for a summer visit. If you’re interested in dunes, you can treat this hike as a nature experience in its own right and pair a visit to the museum with the topics covered there.

The Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO) is located in the community of Las Conchas, southeast of downtown Puerto Peñasco. Its visitor center in Puerto Peñasco displays the skeleton of a 55-foot-long fin whale and an exhibit about fishing. At the CEDO site, ponds provide a refuge for two Rio Sonoyta pupfish: the Longfin Dace and the Desert Pupfish. These insights complement the dunes and beaches with topics related to marine life, fishing, and biodiversity.

Excursions and Nature Experiences

NaturArte offered a range of community-organized tours: a full-day tour to San Jorge Island, a half-day oyster-farming experience, and a half-day Estero excursion with easy birdwatching and a nature walk. Also included in its former offerings were an Estero kayaking tour, available only at the highest tide, and a two-hour exploration of tidal pools near CEDO, possible only at low tide. These examples show how closely some water and nature experiences depend on the tides.

Another option was a half-day community-organized mining tour in Bahía San Jorge. Whale watching in Puerto Peñasco was authorized by SEMARNAT under Mexican standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010. Local Festivals, Oysters, and Golf

The local calendar includes the Festival Cultural del Desierto in February and the Fiesta del Camarón in September. Oyster farms in Estero Morúa near Puerto Peñasco offer a taste of the coast: visitors can try oysters freshly harvested from the sea. Ostionera El Barco has a seafood restaurant serving freshly harvested oysters; the dunes around Ostionera El Barco are used for sandboarding.
