To understand Chacmuchuch’s landscape, it is important to consider the municipality it belongs to: the coast of Costa Mujeres forms a peninsula there, separating the open Caribbean Sea from the Chacmuchuch Lagoon. Behind the beaches of Costa Mujeres lies the Chacmuchuch lagoon system, with mangrove channels along Isla Blanca. Chacmuchuch Lagoon is located on Isla Blanca. This means the municipality brings together open coast, lagoon, and mangroves as distinct natural settings.

Lagoon, coast, and conservation

The Costa Mujeres area is known for its white-sand beaches, as well as mangroves and jungle that serve as a natural buffer. The combination of coast and lagoon system gives the surroundings a strong connection to nature. If you enjoy experiencing landscapes from the water, the mangrove channels offer a different perspective from the reef areas off the coast.

The Sistema Lagunar Chacmuchuch was designated a nature reserve with the status of an ecological conservation zone on August 9, 1999. It covers 1,914.52 hectares and lies in the municipalities of Isla Mujeres and Benito Juárez. The Chacmuchuch Environmental Management Unit also has conservation objectives: these concern flora and fauna, the mangrove ecosystem, and primary productivity. Conservation is therefore as much a part of the regional context as the landscape itself.

Water activities and nature watching

In the lagoon system, you can kayak through mangrove channels with a local guide. For snorkeling and diving trips, local operators in the municipality organize tours in reef areas protected by CONANP. Rules are in place to protect participants and coral. These activities take you to different natural settings: kayaking focuses on the channels, while reef trips visit protected coral areas.

Birdwatching also has a specific place in this natural area. During an evening birdwatching activity at Laguna Chacmuchuch in 2025, more than 20 species were observed; at one location, more than 100 yellow-crowned night herons were also counted. These figures refer to that particular activity and do not indicate that it is held regularly.

Isla Mujeres as a distinct island setting

The wider travel destination of Isla Mujeres offers further nature and cultural experiences. At Playa Norte, you can enjoy clear, shallow water and white sand; visitors can swim, relax, and snorkel there. Garrafón Natural Reef Park is located at Punta Sur on Isla Mujeres, where visitors can also snorkel at its coral reef. This makes it possible to distinguish a beach stay on Isla Mujeres from mangrove and lagoon experiences in the municipality.

Art and Maya culture also shape this island setting. The Parque Escultórico de Punta Sur is home to 21 sculptures reflecting Maya symbols, rituals, and expressions of the Maya worldview. The Templo de Ixchel was also built at Punta Sur in honor of Ixchel, the Maya goddess of fertility, love, and medicine. At the Malecón Caribe, 25 sculptures in five “habitats” represent the island’s natural and cultural richness. The sculpture “Mujer Isleña” contains two QR codes that provide access to interpretations of island trova, including “Mujer Isleña” by Virgilio “El Chino” Fernández and “Sirenita de Amor” by Isolda Martínez Vera.
