Around Chacalal, you’ll find a range of travel experiences: water activities, archaeological history, and protected nature. These include a cenote activity at Xel-Há Park, the nearby archaeological site of Xelhá, the protected Santuario de la Tortuga Marina Xcacel-Xcacelito, and Akumal’s marine landscape. When looking for a vacation rental, this is a helpful starting point: consider whether your stay will be shaped mainly by park activities, cultural heritage, or nature.

Water activities and protected nature

The Snuba® Cenote activity at Xel-Há Park combines elements of diving with a snorkeling session, taking you down to a depth of up to seven meters in a cenote. This makes a specific water activity the focus here, while Akumal is characterized by its marine landscape. If you’re interested in cenotes, you can treat the combination of snorkeling and diving as a distinct focus for your itinerary. Participation requirements may change; check them with the park operator before your visit.

Another focus for water activities is nearby Akumal. Its shallow waters are home to a permanent aggregation of various fish species and sea turtles, as well as particularly extensive seagrass beds and some coral patches. Here, the focus is on the marine landscape and its natural features rather than on a single activity. The Santuario de la Tortuga Marina Xcacel-Xcacelito is also located near Chacalal. This natural area is designated as a Zona Sujeta a Conservación Ecológica. Akumal and Xcacel-Xcacelito therefore represent different connections to nature: a marine landscape and a formally designated protected area.

Xelhá: Trading port and mural painting

During the Late Postclassic period (1250–1550), the archaeological site of Xelhá was one of the most important trading ports on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Xelhá also preserves the Edificio de los Pájaros, with outstanding examples of mural painting. Its role as a port places the site within the context of trade along the entire east coast; the building, by contrast, draws attention to a specific piece of cultural heritage. Xelhá thus combines regional historical significance with a particular structure and its mural painting.
