Handmade dolls, a historic monument, and a wooded area with opportunities for outdoor activities give Amealco De Bonfil several different sides. At the heart of the town is the Museo de la Muñeca Artesanal. Nearby, the Parque Recreativo Cerro de los Gallos adds hiking, mountain biking, and camping to the picture. When choosing your destination, you can balance cultural discoveries with time in nature.

Doll art in Amealco

The Museo de la Muñeca Artesanal was founded in 2014 on the occasion of the 2nd National Festival of Handmade Dolls. Its collection includes more than 400 local, national, and international pieces. Two dedicated exhibition rooms focus on the Lele and Dönxu dolls. The collection thus offers more than a single perspective on handcrafted dolls: their origins range from local to national and international, while each of the two named rooms puts a particular doll at the center.

The museum’s history is also connected to the festival. Since 2014, the National Festival of Handmade Dolls has been held every November at the Museo de la Muñeca Artesanal. The festival competition has categories for textiles, pottery, plant fibers, and new designs. If you are interested in different materials and approaches to design, these categories can serve as a guide to the variety of the competition.

Culture and history in town

The Parroquia de Santa María Amealco is classified by the INAH as a historic monument. This designation gives the building a distinct place among the town’s cultural attractions. Together with the doll museum, it offers two ways to get to know Amealco: through a craft associated with a recurring festival and through a building classified as a historic monument.

Another museum visit explores paleontology. The Museo Municipal Ricardo Pozas Arciniega displays mammoth tusks in a special room titled “La cápsula del tiempo: Hallazgos paleontológicos en Amealco.” The exhibition explores what fossils are, how they form, and where they are found. It also describes biological characteristics of the animals that lived in the region before they fossilized. This museum space therefore combines actual finds with fundamental questions about fossils and the region’s ancient wildlife.

La Caja Queretana adds another creative dimension: the project, based in Amealco and led by Silvia Velasco Orozco, combines regional iconographic symbols with craftsmanship. It complements the themes of dolls, competition, and paleontology with an approach that brings regional imagery and creative craft together.

Nearby: Cerro de los Gallos

The Parque Recreativo Cerro de los Gallos offers a contrast to the museums and cultural attractions. This extensive wooded area has camping facilities and several hiking areas. Day visitors can also use mountain bikes on an internal route on the Cerro.

When searching for a vacation rental, you can consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay. If doll art, the festival, museums, and the Parroquia are your priorities, focus on Amealco. If you would also like to include hiking areas, the mountain biking route, or camping options, you can consider the nearby Parque Recreativo Cerro de los Gallos as a separate factor when choosing where to stay.

If you’d like to add other places to your selection: Santa Rosa Jáuregui, Ezequiel Montes, Coyote, Tlacote el Alto, El Pueblito, Ciénaga, Crucitas and San Juan Del Río.
