Santos Reyes Nopala: Chatina Heritage and Mountain Landscape
Accommodation in Santos Reyes Nopala
Santos Reyes Nopala combines Chatina heritage and cultural traditions with striking mountain terrain and coffee cultivation. The municipality is located in the Costa region of the state of Oaxaca. Its municipal seat lies in a small valley at the foot of Cerro del Atole—a place whose character is shaped by both history and landscape.
A Valley Between Mountains and Waterways
The municipal seat is surrounded by mountains: Cerro de la Iglesia lies to the north, Cerro del Pajarito to the east, Cerro Travieso to the southeast, and Cerro del Atole to the west. The northern part of the municipality continues into the Sierra Madre del Sur and includes coffee plantations and pine-oak forests. The hydrological classification also extends beyond the town: the municipal area belongs to region RH 21, Costa de Oaxaca, and the C Río Colotepec y Otros drainage basin. The Río del Maíz runs along the edge of Nopala; the Río La Neblina flows toward the road to Cerro del Aire.
Chatina Heritage and Archaeological Traces
The settlement history of Santos Reyes Nopala dates back to around 800 BCE; it reached its greatest flourishing between 500 and 700 CE. Archaeological pieces from the Classic period, dated to 500–700 CE and attributed to the Chatina culture, are preserved in the Palacio Municipal. These include anthropomorphic monoliths. Twelve stelae are also set into the walls of the Palacio Municipal. The period from 500 to 700 CE therefore serves as a shared point of reference for both the town’s stated flourishing and the dating of the pieces.
A 2015 report describes stone structures, pyramids, ball courts, and other areas of a former wealthy city that had been studied in the Santos Reyes Nopala area. According to the report, the archaeological site had not yet been fully excavated. The finds described provide further clues about the area’s earlier settlement history.
Culture, Art, and Traditions
The La Huerta mural at the entrance to Santos Reyes Nopala was described in 2021 as a welcome for visitors. A 2021 article also reported on the first public sculpture by artists Modesto Reyes López and Delfino Cruz Baltazar, which they gave to the municipality. It depicts a flowering Nopal de Cruz. The Casa de Cultura Casa del Pueblo is listed as a cultural center in Santos Reyes Nopala.
At a 2024 cultural presentation, Sones and Chilenas were performed for the Boda Chatina and Torna Boda. The Jarabe del Guajolote comes from Santos Reyes Nopala. The Mayordomía procession also follows its own route: giant Marmotas, or Monos de Calenda, parade through town with a band. Sones and Chilenas are danced along the way, before the procession ends at the church. These examples offer concrete points of reference if you are interested in the municipality’s music and cultural heritage.
Coffee and Crafts in the Municipality
For the 2008–2010 planning period, the municipal plan identifies coffee as the municipality’s main agricultural activity, citing 2,800 hectares and 500 producers for that period. The craft processing of coffee into ground coffee is also considered a tourist attraction in the region. In addition, there are small craft workshops of various kinds in the municipality, where women make up the majority of workers. Together with the coffee plantations in the north, these details shape the area’s economic and cultural profile.
