Ocuituco

Ocuituco is a stop in Morelos on the Route of the 14 Monasteries. The 14 monasteries were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The church and the Ex-Convento de Santiago Apóstol provide a tangible focus for the town’s history. This theme is complemented by the Casa de Cultura Ocuituco and the Museo Comunitario de Ocuituco; Cerro de Jumiltepec is a destination for outdoor activities.

Monastery History and Architecture

The first Augustinian convent in New Spain was built in Ocuituco and dedicated to the Apostle Santiago Apóstol. The church of Santiago Apóstol was completed between 1536 and 1541. The facade of the Ex-Convento is made of hewn stone. The choir window has a rounded arch and an alfiz; four anthropomorphic figures stand at the main entrance. Inside, remnants of original frescoes have been preserved, including friezes and coffered decorations on the vaults. The architecture thus draws attention to several parts of the building—from the facade, windows, and entrance to the surviving features inside.

The cloister also has distinctive features: it is one of the simplest cloisters. It contains a hexagonal fountain decorated with six carved lions. The broad buttresses of the Ex-Convento protected the Indigenous community. Culture in Ocuituco

Casa de Cultura Ocuituco was established in 2009 as a municipal cultural space. It has rooms for cooking classes as well as for music, fine arts, visual arts, and performing arts. There is also an auditorium with seating for 400 people. The Casa offers a different cultural perspective on Ocuituco from exploring monastery architecture.

The Museo Comunitario de Ocuituco exhibits paintings by artists from the municipality. The museum also has an archaeological stone. Hiking and Camping at Cerro de Jumiltepec
