The Tlahualiles tradition is particularly striking: it includes an annual pilgrimage and dates back to its introduction by Franciscans in the second half of the 16th century. Tlahualiles and Cultural Insights
Tlahualile masks can be up to 2 meters tall and weigh 20 kilograms. They are made of papier-mâché and decorated with feathers. The dancers portray a religious and military struggle, dancing for around 12 hours. Those interested in the tradition encounter not only its religious significance but also a striking form of craftsmanship. Sahuayo is also known for its handmade sombreros; traditional huaraches can be purchased in the city.
The “Una Mirada al Mundo Sahuayense” Sahuayo Museum is located in Parque Lineal “Manuel Gómez Morín.” It was intended to introduce visitors to Sahuayo’s historical, cultural, and religious development. Another way to learn about the Tlahualiles was at the Museo del Tlahualile in the Quinto Patio of Hotel Plaza, where visitors could take a tour of the history, art, and making of the masks and costumes.
The Ruta del Martirio is another cultural stop in the city. The tourist promenade runs along the road to the municipal cemetery. Exhibitions there have featured clothing, objects, weapons, drawings, paintings, and sculptures from the Cristero period. The “Maestra Petrita Cortés de Sahagún” Casa de la Cultura is considered a center for cultural learning and has been associated with programs, classes, workshops, and other cultural activities.
Religious Traditions and Places
The Tlahualiles pilgrimage is not the only religious tradition connected to everyday life in the region. At the chapel in Ejido Casa Fuerte, the annual prayer for favorable rainfall brings together agricultural producers and families from rural areas. Sahuayo’s tourism department also coordinated tours to religious pilgrimage sites in the city. The Holy Week program included a living Stations of the Cross.
At the Escalinata de Cristo Rey, there is a Stations of the Cross created by Luis Sahagún Cortés with indigenous themes. The staircase was restored as a public space for people visiting for religious or recreational reasons. At an event there, more than 14,000 lit candles illuminated traditional carpets. Relics are kept in the Santiago Apóstol parish church; the catacombs of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús parish church were the resting place for human remains for many years.
Time Outdoors and Local Specialties
