Paracho: Guitar Craftsmanship, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Paracho
Paracho de Verduzco is internationally known for its handmade acoustic guitars and other string instruments. Guitar makers also handcraft violins, mandolins and charangos here. For anyone interested in music and traditional crafts, Paracho offers more than a single exhibit: instrument making shapes the local culture and provides a tangible focus for a trip.
Guitar Making and Culture in Paracho
During visits to local workshops, you can get a close-up look at how guitars are made. This offers a different perspective from viewing finished instruments: the craft itself takes centre stage. The Casa de la Cultura also houses the Museo de la Guitarra Antigua and offers art workshops and exhibitions. It was inaugurated in 1929 by decree of President Lázaro Cárdenas and continues to be a cultural landmark in the region.
Training is also part of the town’s instrument culture. The Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Guitarra has been training local guitarists since 1994. Together with the work of guitar makers, this institution shows how instrument making and musical practice come together in Paracho. Other local craft traditions include wood carvings, textiles and rebozos, as well as wooden toys. Families travelling together can find something to suit different interests: instruments and workshops on the one hand, and other forms of craftsmanship on the other.
Discover the Town and Its Traditions
The Monumento a la Mujer Purépecha is eight metres tall and welcomes visitors at the northern entrance to Paracho. Another landmark, the ten-metre-high copper Monumento a la Guitarra, stands at the southern entrance to the municipality of Paracho and commemorates the town’s most important craft. The two monuments offer different points of focus: one puts the Purépecha woman centre stage, while the other pays tribute to guitar making.
Other historical highlights include Paracho’s communal chapels, with their 16th-century vernacular architecture. If you are interested in the town’s history and cultural character, you can add these chapels to your itinerary alongside the Casa de la Cultura and instrument making.
Nature, Hiking and Cycling
Parque Comunal Tata Vasco offers a change of pace from cultural discoveries: the nature reserve covers around 17 hectares and offers opportunities for hiking and camping. This means you can also focus your stay on nature and outdoor activities. When choosing a holiday rental, consider whether guitar making and culture are the main priorities for your trip, or whether you would also like to set aside time for activities in the nature reserve.
There are also opportunities for cycling in the municipality of Paracho. Several cycling routes for locals and visitors are being established in the municipal seat. For travel within the municipality, Federal Highway 37 is an important route: it provides access through the municipality of Paracho from Carapan to Lázaro Cárdenas.
Festivals and Purépecha Cuisine
The Feria Internacional de la Guitarra takes place during the first week of August. The Festival de Globos de Cantoya takes place on the third weekend in July, when colourful paper balloons light up the night sky over Paracho. The two events have different focuses: the Feria celebrates the guitar, while the glowing paper balloons are the highlight of the festival.
Purépecha cuisine in Paracho includes churipo, corundas, atole de grano, atápakua and Michoacán-style carnitas. These dishes add a culinary dimension to a trip, alongside the visible traditions of instrument making and crafts.
