The options range from the courtyards of Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara to the agave landscape and experiences involving water and volcanoes. So first consider which places and themes interest you most; you can then use them to guide your search for a suitable place to stay.

Cultural Sites and Their Scale

Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara covers 2.34 hectares and contains 23 courtyards. It is currently home to the Cabañas Cultural Institute. The number of courtyards and the size of the complex give the site a clearly defined physical scale, while the institute points to its present-day cultural role. Guachimontones has a different architectural layout: the site extends over 20 hectares and includes two monumental ball courts and five outer plazas. Agave Landscape and Living Culture

The Agave Region covers 35,019 hectares between the foothills of the Tequila Volcano and the deeply cut valley of the Rio Grande. It is one of Mexico’s most important cultural landscapes. The region is home to active distilleries that reflect the development of international tequila consumption in the 19th and 20th centuries. The landscape and the distilleries thus offer two related ways to explore the Agave Region: its physical character and the history of a product whose consumption developed over those two centuries. The Wixárika Route is also a significant cultural landmark, but it extends far beyond a single excursion destination. On July 12, 2025, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site, recognizing it as a biocultural corridor more than 500 kilometres long, crossing Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Durango and San Luis Potosí. A ceremonial route, it connects sacred sites and ends in Wirikuta. Its extent and the fact that it crosses several states make it a regional network to consider if you are interested in culture and spiritual significance.

Nature Destinations and Active Experiences

The Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna La Primavera covers approximately 30,500 hectares in the municipalities of Zapopan, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Tala and El Arenal in Jalisco. The approximate area and the four municipalities named provide a concrete sense of the protected area’s location. If you want to focus on nature, you can take its location within these municipalities into account when choosing where to search.

For a waterfall visit, Cascada Salto de Nogal is a specific option: from Tapalpa, it takes 30 minutes by car followed by a 30-minute walk to reach it. The two consecutive legs are relevant to planning your day. In Bahía de Tenacatita, you can kayak through mangroves, snorkel and take boat trips around the bay. Near the destination, boat trips to Isla Cocinas depart from Punta Pérula; snorkelling and swimming are possible in the area. These water-based experiences offer different focuses: you might be interested in mangroves and the bay, a boat trip or activities in the water.

For Volcán Nevado de Colima, the described access route is also important to bear in mind. It is via the track known as El Milanés, starting from the Ciudad Guzmán–El Grullo road; the route then continues for 17 kilometres along the El Milanés track.
