Mineral Del Monte, also known as Real del Monte, combines a rich mining history with museums, walking tours and a cool, damp forest. On 27 October 2004, the town was awarded the designation Pueblo Mágico. For your travel planning, this offers a blend of historical traces, landscapes and local traditions. If you’re deciding whether Mineral Del Monte is right for your holiday, you’ll find both insights into mining and ways to explore local stories and food here.

Mining History and Museums

Mina de Acosta preserves its original layout, an aqueduct and perimeter walls dating from its establishment in 1727. These different structural features give the site a tangible historical character. Another glimpse of mining work can be found at the Monumento al Minero: the bronze statue depicts an anonymous miner with his tools. Together, the mine and the monument offer two different perspectives—the preserved site and the depiction of a worker.

The Museo de Medicina Laboral, founded in 1907, preserves the medical furniture and equipment that have been used since it opened. The Museo del Paste, in turn, displays objects used by English miners. Those interested in the town’s history can explore different collections this way, rather than focusing only on the physical traces of mining.

The English Cemetery was established around the middle of the 19th century. Its 755 masonry and marble graves all face east. People of English, Scottish, Irish, German, Dutch and Chinese origin are buried there. The number of graves, their orientation and the origins represented make this site a historical subject in its own right.

Culture, Walking Tours and Viewpoints

Casa Grande currently serves as a venue for exhibitions, conferences and congresses organized by UAEH. The Museo Casa Grande offers collections, exhibitions, editorial presentations, theatrical performances and musical events. Guided tours and educational programs are also part of its offerings. Alongside mining history, there are therefore other cultural formats to choose from; which ones interest you during your stay depends on whether you prefer exhibitions, performances or guided topics.

Daytime walking tours in the Pueblo Mágico take visitors to well-known sites and viewpoints. Night tours feature legends and popular tales—a different focus from the daytime tours. The Mirador Turístico Plaza la Purísima offers panoramic views of Real del Monte. There are also opportunities to take photos wearing a miner’s helmet and to buy handicrafts and souvenirs. The monumental letters spelling Real del Monte stand in the upper part of the main garden and are presented as a spot for panoramic photos of the historic center and its surroundings.

Forest and Local Specialty

Bosque del Hiloche is a misty, damp and cool forest. Its character includes rural landscapes and views of wooded areas and mining sites. If you’re looking for a forest landscape as well as cultural experiences, this place offers a different focus from museums and historic buildings.

Local cuisine can also be connected with the town’s history: visitors can take part in preparing the traditional paste in Real del Monte. This specialty is particularly highlighted in the Pueblo Mágico. English miners ate pastes as food in the mine; the traditional connection between the dish and mining makes preparing it a distinctive way to explore the town’s history.
