Colima brings together archaeological sites, regional history, forests and the importance of salt production. When planning a trip, you can choose different focuses, from cultural discoveries to experiences in nature. Places such as the Museo Regional de Historia de Colima, El Chanal and Las Huertas offer specific points of reference to help you make your choice.

History and Archaeological Sites

The Museo Regional de Historia de Colima presents the region’s history from pre-Hispanic times through the first half of the 20th century. It is located at Portal Morelos in a building constructed as a residence in the early 19th century in the Porfirian style. The museum opened in 1988. A visit therefore combines an overview of different historical periods with a building whose own history dates back to the early 19th century.

The archaeological sites also offer different points of interest. In the publicly accessible area of El Chanal, you can see ceremonial temples, palaces, altars and a ball court. The usual route begins at the main square in the city of Colima. It follows the El Chanal road or the extension of Calle Venustiano Carranza as far as the Tercer Anillo Periférico, which leads to the town of the same name. In the La Campana archaeological zone in the municipality of Villa de Álvarez, streets and buildings have been preserved; numerous petroglyphs can be found in plazas and courtyards. Visitors interested in archaeological remains can discover different forms of preserved structures and stone carvings at these sites.

The Teatro Hidalgo adds the performing arts to these historical and archaeological perspectives. Since 1879, it has hosted theatre, opera, dance, international festivals, performances and exhibitions. The Fiestas Charrotaurinas in Villa de Álvarez last 15 days. Together, these examples show different aspects of cultural life: a venue offering a broad range of formats and a festival with a stated duration.

Forests and Nature in Las Huertas

The Área de Protección de Recursos Naturales Las Huertas lies east of the municipal seat of Comala. The landscape is characterized by tropical dry forests and gallery forests. There are two ways to get there: Las Huertas is accessible by public transport via the Colima–Comala road, and you can also travel by car. If you would like to include nature experiences in your trip, consider this location and the transport options when choosing your holiday base.

Salt Tradition and Experiences in Cuyutlán

La Ruta de la Sal takes visitors through the salt-making process, from harvesting to packaging. Visitors are taken to Laguna de Cuyutlán, the region’s salt production centre, in an unusual truck with a palm-thatched roof. The route uses solar energy exclusively. Participants can collect salt themselves using tools provided by the saltworks team. The experience therefore covers both the individual production steps and hands-on participation.

Cuyutlán salt is natural, free of additives and produced through evaporation in the sun. At the Museo de la Sal, interactive exhibitions offer further insights into the subject: they cover the history of the saltworks, the importance of salt to the region and its impact on the local community. At the Tortugario de Cuyutlán, visitors can learn about the life cycle of sea turtles and conservation measures, as well as take part in releases. Cuyutlán therefore offers different visitor experiences focused on both salt production and sea turtles.

Choose Places and Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Interests

For a cultural trip, the museums, archaeological sites and Teatro Hidalgo offer specific points of interest. If you would like to include nature and salt production, you can explore Las Huertas and the experiences around Cuyutlán. The cuisine of the municipality of Colima also adds to the regional discovery: cenadurías serve Sopitos colimotes, enchiladas and pozole seco. When looking for a holiday rental, consider which of these interests will shape your trip and include the relevant locations in your choice of where to stay.
