Los Plátanos and the Attractions of the Municipality of Chínipas

The Acueducto Los Arcos offers a direct glimpse into the history of mining. A 154-meter-long section dating from the 17th century is almost completely intact and built from quarry stone and lime. The structure was used to grind minerals extracted from the Palmarejo mine. The aqueduct can therefore be viewed both as a structure and as part of the region’s mining history. The section is on private property; access is not ruled out, provided the structure is respected. Check locally before visiting.

The Iglesia Santa Inés adds to the historical focus: its construction began in 1632. Mining remains and natural resources are also among the municipality’s tourist attractions. Viewpoints at Cerro del Recodo

Those who make the views their priority will find several named landmarks at Cerro del Recodo. The Escaleras del Cerro del Recodo are a newer staircase with 1,348 steps. They begin at the foot of Cerro del Recodo next to Río Chínipas and lead to the viewpoint of the same name. Because of its elevation and location, the Mirador del Cerro del Recodo is considered one of the most important tourist viewpoints in the municipality of Chínipas. It can be reached by vehicle, along a path, or via a staircase.

La Virgencita, a rock formation bearing an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, lies between the viewpoint and the summit. The base of the image is usually reached on foot. A grotto right next to it provides a route for climbing to the summit of Cerro del Recodo. The viewpoint and the summit are therefore separate destinations: the path and staircase lead to the Mirador, while the grotto provides access to the summit.

Recreation at Río Chínipas

Río Chínipas offers a different kind of vacation. There is a public family recreation area with densely leafy willows. It can be visited during most of the year, except during the rainy season. The area is easy to reach on foot or by vehicle. If you are planning a visit to the river, take the rainy season into account when choosing your dates. This makes the river a different kind of place to spend time together than the stairways and viewpoints.

A Glimpse into the Mining Past

The Antigua Hacienda El Zapote also tells the story of the region’s mining history: during the mining boom in the area, it was used to separate minerals.
