Discover Hanover Parish: Landscape and History
Accommodation in Hanover Parish
Hanover Parish combines sweeping views across hill country and bay with coastal scenery, outdoor activities and notable historic sites. From Dolphin Head Mountain, the view extends across other parishes in western Jamaica; above Lucea Harbour, a broad view opens over the bay. Historic buildings and the region’s yams also give the destination its own cultural character.
Views, Coast and Activities
The climb up Dolphin Head Mountain opens up sweeping views of other parishes in western Jamaica. From the hills above Lucea Harbour, the view stretches more than 180 degrees across the bay. For those interested in scenery, these offer two distinct perspectives: a mountain view over the western parishes and a broad view across the water at Lucea.
Negril Beach stretches from Westmoreland into the Parish of Hanover. Miskito Cove lies east of Lucea, about seven miles from the town. The bay is considered a natural harbour and suitable for watersports and recreational fishing. It is associated with a story of Miskito raids on Taíno villages.
The leisure activities also vary in nature: rafting is offered on the Great River in eastern Hanover. Clifton Cave and Cousin’s Cove Cave are among the caves in the parish and are considered leisure options for adventurous visitors. Paradise Falls is another leisure option for visitors. The activities mentioned range from river outings to caves and waterfalls, rather than being limited to a single style of travel.
Hanover’s Buildings and History
Fort Charlotte in Lucea was built by the British in the mid-18th century to defend the northwestern part of the island. The Kenilworth Ruins are among Jamaica’s most impressive 18th-century industrial buildings. Lucea Town Hall was built around 1840 in the Jamaican Georgian style and originally served as the town’s courthouse.
Hanover Parish Church is also known as St. Mary’s Anglican and is believed to have been built around 1725. It has a working organ dating from 1891; the organ has been regularly maintained and was damaged by rain in the past. In the church’s history, pastors D. W. Rose, who served from 1806 to 1824, and John Stainsby, who served from 1833 to 1853, are known for their commitment to justice.
Sir Alexander Bustamante was born in Blenheim. He was the first Jamaican to receive the distinction of National Hero during his lifetime. Lucea yams also recall Hanover’s past: after the abolition of slavery in 1834, they were among the well-known crops with which Hanover supplied much of the rest of Jamaica.
What Kind of Trip Are You Looking For?
When choosing a vacation rental, you can start by deciding which aspects of your trip matter most. Scenery and water take centre stage in the views from Dolphin Head Mountain, the bay at Lucea and Negril Beach; rafting on the Great River and the caves mentioned offer different activity options. Those more interested in history and architecture can explore Fort Charlotte, Lucea Town Hall, the Kenilworth Ruins and Hanover Parish Church.
Jamaica in a Broader Context
The Blue and John Crow Mountains are in Jamaica. The area provided refuge for the Maroons, formerly enslaved people, and preserves tangible cultural heritage connected with Maroon history, including the Nanny Town Heritage Route. It is also one of the world’s most irreplaceable protected areas for amphibians, birds and mammals.
Reggae is a central part of Jamaican culture. Blue Mountain Coffee is also closely tied to a particular landscape: authentic Jamaican coffee bearing this designation is grown exclusively at elevations between 3,000 and 5,500 feet in the cloud forest of the Blue and John Crow Mountains. Ackee and Saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish and a popular local breakfast. Depending on the season, it may also be served with fried dumplings, callaloo, green bananas, avocado and plantains.
Other experiences across the country include YS Falls, with seven tiers of cascades. Visitors can zipline 40 feet above the waterfalls, go tubing on the river, use rope swings into clear pools and swim in a large pool fed by a natural spring. Check current arrangements before your trip. The annual Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Festival celebrates coffee and offers visitors coffee-based products to sample.
