Soufriere between Cultural Heritage and Marine Reserve
Accommodation in Soufriere
Soufriere brings together two distinct areas to explore: on the outskirts of town is the Bois Cotlette estate, with its plantation architecture and layered history. Along the coast, areas of the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve are designated for swimming and snorkeling. If you’re looking for a vacation rental in Soufriere, these highlights can shape your choice of location: would you rather focus on cultural heritage and gardens, or also include the protected marine environment in your travel plans?
Bois Cotlette: Plantation Architecture and Cultural Heritage
The French Colonial Maison on the Bois Cotlette estate is considered the best-preserved example of plantation architecture in Dominica. The Bois Cotlette Heritage Tour covers both the history of the owner and planter class and that of the residents of the enslaved village. Topics include building structures, documents from an investment company, factory ruins and gardens, as well as 15 sites and artifacts from an archaeological excavation. The tour is available by prior appointment only.
The tour includes a walk through the planters’ herb garden, located south of the Maison. Guests on the Heritage Tour also have the opportunity to enjoy Creole snacks and refreshments. Another option is the Bois Cotlette Estate Chocolate Experience Tour, which is available by prior appointment only. You can sample cocoa at every stage of production. Bois Cotlette Tours also offers walks through fields of sugar cane, cacao trees and coffee trees. When choosing a tour, you can therefore focus on different interests: the estate’s history, the garden, cocoa or the crops grown there.
Marine Areas around Soufriere
Tous sable Beach is designated in the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve for swimming and snorkeling from shore. Check local conditions before entering the water. The protected area near Soufriere also includes a spawning ground for many pelagic and reef fish; fishing is prohibited there. This clear rule helps visitors understand how to use the marine area and distinguishes this protected zone from a fishing spot open for general use.
L’Abyme is also in the Marine Reserve. A tourism article dated October 5, 2020, describes how its underwater world can already be seen while snorkeling at the surface. More than twenty named dive sites lie within the boundaries of the reserve. This number gives an idea of the variety of designated sites; when planning your own visit, take the conditions at each one into account.
The Wider Area: Saint Mark
Within the wider destination of Saint Mark, the Soufriere-Scott’s Head Marine Reserve encompasses the villages of Scott’s Head and Soufriere, extending to Anse Bateau near the village of Pointe Michel. The bay within the reserve is an extinct volcanic crater that forms a lava vent. The Scott’s Head, or Cachacrou, Peninsula separates the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. It is home to an old gun emplacement with views across the bay toward Roseau and across the channel toward Martinique.
The ruins of the L. Rose Lime Oil Factory in Soufriere are another of the area’s historic features. The hot mineral baths at Sulphur Springs are among the places to explore in Soufriere; confirm local access and bathing conditions before visiting. The Marine Reserve was ratified, in part, to preserve traditional fishing practices. This purpose exists alongside the protection of the spawning ground, where fishing is prohibited.
For a broader view of Saint Mark, the 40-mile Waitukubuli Sea Trail runs in 14 sections from Scotts Head to the northern tip of Dominica. The Soufriere Outdoor Centre offers guided expeditions and rentals for paddlers of all experience levels on the trail; check current availability directly with the provider. Dive Fest was launched in 1994 in the southern fishing communities of Soufriere and Scott’s Head. A notice dated June 28, 2023, described it as an annual festival. Check current dates and programming before your trip.
When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: Bois Cotlette offers cultural heritage and tours on the outskirts of town, while the Marine Reserve and the attractions across the wider destination of Saint Mark broaden the focus to coastal scenery and water-based activities.
