Puntarenas offers a variety of nature experiences: three hiking trails wind through a protected area in the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, boat trips through mangroves are available in Osa Canton, and you can watch humpback whales near Marino Ballena National Park. The landscapes and excursions also differ considerably. Which experiences you want to focus on can therefore help shape your choice of vacation destination.

Hiking trails and protected landscapes

In the north of the province, on the Nicoya Peninsula south of Montezuma, lies the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve. It protects 1,269 hectares of land and 1,790 hectares of marine area. There are three trails of different lengths to choose from when planning a hike: a 2 km loop, a 1 km trail specifically for older people and children, and a 10 km trail to Cabo Blanco. If you want to take trail length into account when planning your day, you’ll find a clear choice here between a short loop and a longer hike.

Cabo Blanco is also a well-known destination for birdwatchers. Birds found there include frigatebirds, gulls and pelicans.

A different landscape defines Carara National Park, southeast of Orotina. The national park covers 4,700 hectares and is home to three different forest types. For travelers especially interested in forest landscapes, this natural area offers a different focus from the protected area on the Nicoya Peninsula. Cocos Island National Park, in turn, lies 550 km off Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. It is the only island in the tropical eastern Pacific with tropical rainforest – an extraordinary geographical feature.

Experiences on the water

The Curú National Wildlife Refuge is on the Gulf of Nicoya. It stretches from Punta Quesera to Punta Curú. Curú Beach is suitable for swimming and observing flora and fauna. If you want to combine water activities with nature observation, you can consider this spot as an option alongside the hiking areas.

In Osa Canton, whale-watching trips to see humpback whales are offered near Marino Ballena National Park. Also in Osa, boat trips run through the Térraba-Sierpe mangroves. The beaches of Dominical and Dominicalito offer the opportunity to learn to surf. In this part of the province, wildlife watching, mangrove boat trips and an active approach to the sea are therefore available as distinct experiences.

Bioluminescence can be observed on some beaches in Puntarenas Province and in the Gulf of Nicoya. Another distinctive feature is Playa Hermosa de Garabito: it was designated a World Surf Reserve, the first in Central America and the eleventh worldwide. This designation is a distinct part of the place’s identity; it should be distinguished from the surfing lessons offered in Dominical and Dominicalito.

Getting there, island history and regional cuisine

San Lucas Island National Park can only be reached by water. Transport and tour services usually depart from the ICT Tourist Pier in El Carmen, in Puntarenas Province. The park is designated as a historic-architectural heritage site and a zone for sustainable tourism use. When planning your trip, access by water is an important difference from hikes in the protected areas mentioned above.

The city of Puntarenas has a ferry terminal connected across the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera and Cóbano. If your travel plans include places on both sides of the gulf, this connection is a useful point of reference. When choosing a vacation rental or vacation home, it’s a good idea to first decide which experiences you want to prioritize: trails and birds in Cabo Blanco, forest landscapes at Carara, water activities in Curú, or excursions in Osa Canton. Seafood cuisine is also recommended as an experience for visitors to Puntarenas.
