Carmen offers a glimpse of different sides of the wider area: in the city of Siquirres, you can visit the market and a church with unusually circular architecture, while regional trails lead to lagoons and river landscapes. A banana tour is also one of the experiences available in Siquirres canton. When choosing your vacation rental in Carmen, it may therefore help to first consider which of these experiences you want to shape your trip.

City Experiences in Siquirres

A visit to the market in the city of Siquirres is an opportunity to experience part of local everyday life. Plan the stop as a separate activity, and check the practical details on site or in advance.

The city is also home to a church whose circular architecture differs from that of other churches elsewhere in the country. This makes it a striking cultural point of interest for travelers who notice architectural styles. Together, the market and the church’s architecture offer two very different ways to experience Siquirres: one through a lively urban gathering place, the other through a distinctive building.

Trails to Laguna Penitencia

For access to the trail at Laguna Penitencia, a 2016 SINAC route description outlines a route via Guápiles, Cariari, Campo Dos, Cuatro Esquinas, and Palacios to the La Pavona dock on the Río La Suerte. From there, a boat takes you to Laguna Penitencia, where the trail’s main entrance is located. The route description lists public transportation for both the land and water portions of the journey.

According to the same route description, a second access route goes via Guápiles, Cariari, Palmitas, and Puerto Lindo. From there, the boat trip follows the Río Colorado and a connecting route toward Tortuguero to Laguna Penitencia. The difference for planning purposes is that public transportation is available only on land along this route; the boat must be booked privately. Since the information dates from 2016 and transport availability may change, check connections and boat transport before making plans.

More Regional Trails and Experiences

Another route toward Tortuguero goes by land via Siquirres, El Carmen, Maryland, and Caño Blanco. From there, it continues along the Río Parismina to Laguna Jalova. Public transportation is listed only for the land portion of this route; boat transport must be booked privately. The route description thus clearly distinguishes between the land and water sections.

There is also a banana tour in Siquirres canton, visited mainly by tourists from cruise ships. Other visitors make reservations with the operator in advance. If you want to include this tour in your trip, arrange your reservation and visit directly with the operator. This lets you plan the experience as part of your itinerary rather than counting on being able to visit spontaneously.

The Pacuare and Reventazón rivers also offer a regional perspective: they can take you downstream to the Lagunas del Tortuguero. The area is considered an excellent tourism destination. The market and church, a tour booked in advance, or a trip along the rivers offer different ways to experience the region. Which one appeals to you most may influence where you stay and what accommodation you choose.
