Oranjestad: History, Culture and Coastal Trails
Accommodation in Oranjestad
Oranjestad combines old and new elements to create a distinctive cityscape. History, museums and routes through the city centre meet a scenic linear park along the coast. When choosing your holiday rental, consider whether you want to focus mainly on the city’s historic sites and cultural offerings, or also include the coastline in your trip.
On foot, by tram and along the coast
Oranjestad’s city centre can be explored on foot or by tram. The Downtown Trolley connects the cruise terminal with the city centre and runs along Main Street, which is designed as a pedestrian zone. It stops at six stations by monuments, museums and major shopping areas. This offers helpful orientation for anyone looking to experience different aspects of the city during their visit. The cruise port is on the north side of the city centre; the central bus station is right beside the cruise terminal and Royal Plaza. If you need bus or event times for your plans, check them before your trip.
The linear park, which runs along the coast from Oranjestad to the airport, offers a different perspective. It complements routes through the city centre with a coastal stretch. When choosing a location for your holiday rental, you can therefore weigh up whether you prefer the city-centre attractions or want to focus your trip equally on the coast and the city.
Fort Zoutman and the city’s history
Fort Zoutman was built to protect Oranjestad from pirates. Dating from 1798, it is Aruba’s oldest building. The Willem III Tower was built in 1868 and formerly served both as a lighthouse and as a public clock. Together, the fort and tower point to different chapters in the city’s history. The Historical Museum is located between them: its permanent exhibition is devoted to important events in Aruba’s history, alongside rotating thematic exhibitions. Check the current exhibition programme before visiting.
The Fort Zoutman Historical Museum also displays a historical collection of documents and events from the past. In the city centre, the historic Ecury family home houses the Archaeological Museum. It displays artefacts from the pre-ceramic period, dating to around 2500 BC. Those interested in early history will find a different perspective here from the exhibition on events in Aruba at the Historical Museum.
Culture and distinctive city scenes
Cas di Cultura is Aruba’s national theatre. If you’re planning to attend a cultural event, it’s worth checking the latest listings. The Bon Bini Festival is a weekly folkloric music and dance festival in the courtyard of Fort Zoutman in the city centre. Check the event date before your trip. The Aruba Aloe Vera Factory and Museum is located at Pitastraat 115 in Oranjestad; confirm the address before you arrive.
Paardenbaai Aruba was unveiled in 2015 as a cultural and historical project featuring eight blue horses in the city centre. Along with the historic buildings and cultural institutions, it shows how different stories coexist in the cityscape.
