Fort and Dockyard

Fort Berkeley is the oldest fortification in English Harbour and dates back to 1704. The fort can be reached via a short nature trail. Those interested in the history of fortifications will find a clearly defined historical focus here.

Nelson’s Dockyard has restored Georgian buildings beside an active harbour. The Dockyard was built and maintained by enslaved Africans and free tradespeople. This history is as much a part of understanding the site as its architecture. Dow’s Hill: History above the Harbour

Dow’s Hill is in English Harbour, within the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park and high above the harbour. The historic Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre makes for a brief stop, with a historical presentation, harbour views and context on Nelson’s Dockyard. Trails and views in the surrounding area

The Middle Ground Trail, also known as the Goat Track, runs along the hills between Fort Berkeley and Pigeon Point Beach. The trail offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the route itself is the focus of your trip planning.

Shirley Heights Lookout is in the vicinity of English Harbour. During the American War of Independence (1774–1783), it initially served as a signal station and observation point for the approaches to English Harbour.
