Sébaco: Tradition and Archaeology
Accommodation in Sébaco
Sébaco brings together longstanding urban traditions and archaeological evidence in the Municipio de Sébaco. During the traditional Diana in honour of the patron saint, a procession with music and fireworks makes its way through the entire city in the early morning hours. The city’s history also includes several changes of location, a museum with ceramic and stone objects in Sébaco, and pre-Hispanic sites in the municipio. Here, you can encounter different periods and forms of cultural heritage.
Traditions and the City’s History
Cerro de la Cruz is in the eastern, higher-elevation part of the city and has traditionally been a gathering place for religious activities. It is particularly associated with the celebrations for Día de la Santa Cruz on 3 May. Cerro is also a good place for outdoor walks. Religious tradition and spending time outdoors therefore come together in the same place.
The Museo de Arqueología e Historia Cihuacoatl de Sébaco was founded on 15 March 2014. A 2023 article reports that its collection includes more than 2,500 ceramic and stone objects. The museum is located north of the Sébaco town hall. Its founding and the collection described give the city’s history a tangible connection to archaeological finds and the materials from which these objects are made.
Sébaco’s changing location is also part of the town’s history: over time, the city moved location four times. The recorded sequence runs from Sébaco Viejo through Los Congos and Tecuanapa to its current location. This relocation is another historical aspect alongside the celebrations and museum objects.
Archaeological Heritage and Activities in the Municipio
The community of Chagüitillo, with its petroglyphs, monoliths and pre-Columbian remains, lies in the Municipio de Sébaco. The Museo Arqueológico de Chagüitillo preserves burial urns, stone tools, pottery and other objects relating to the history of the first inhabitants of the Valle de Sébaco. Its collection offers a different focus from the museum in the city: it draws attention to the valley’s early inhabitants and the objects connected with their history.
The pre-Hispanic sites of Santuario Los Venados and Santuario Apamico are located in the municipio near the community of Chagüitillo. Santuario Los Venados features rock carvings depicting human and animal figures, as well as symbols associated with the beliefs and worldview of the region’s earlier inhabitants. Santuario Apamico preserves a petroglyph called Calendario Lunar de Apamico. Together, the two sites showcase different motifs in the heritage handed down to us: figurative depictions and symbols at one, and a petroglyph with a specific name at the other.
An archaeological route for cultural and scientific tourism connects Santuario Los Venados, Santuario Apamico and the Museo Precolombino de Chagüitillo. In addition, Centro recreativo Paso Real in the community of Paso Real, on the Río Viejo, offers opportunities for artisanal fishing and kayaking. The municipio thus brings together archaeological interests and riverside activities, although they are different types of excursions.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip
When looking for a holiday rental in Sébaco, your preferred focus can guide your choice of location: would you mainly like to explore the traditions, Cerro de la Cruz and the Museo de Arqueología e Historia Cihuacoatl de Sébaco in the city? Or are you especially interested in the archaeological evidence and activities in the municipio? This comparison can help you view the city’s history and the wider range of things to explore in the municipality as distinct parts of a trip.
