San Nicolas: Views, Nature and Pottery Tradition
Accommodation in San Nicolas
The Municipio de San Nicolás combines impressive viewpoints with a long-standing pottery tradition and the natural landscape of a protected area shared with other municipalities. Depending on whether you want to focus on scenery, local crafts or nature experiences, you can discover a different side of the destination.
Views of the Landscape and Volcanoes
The Mirador El Portillo is located at the turnoff towards the community of Quebrada de Agua, two kilometres from the centre of San Nicolás. It offers a beautiful view. Another viewpoint in the Municipio is the Mirador Las Crucitas. It is considered a popular place to admire the landscape of San Nicolás and the volcanoes in the west of the country. From Las Crucitas, you can also watch sunsets and enjoy panoramic views of the Cordillera de los Maribios.
Near the community of La Garnacha and the Reserva Natural Cerro Tisey is the Mirador y Rancho de Don Luis. From this viewpoint, you can look out over the Municipio de San Nicolás and its surroundings. The Mirador La Garnacha also offers a connection to the landscape of the Reserva Natural Tisey-Estanzuela: from here, you can experience its scenic beauty. The viewpoint is one of the highest elevations in the Departamento de Estelí.
Native pines and oaks grow on Cerro Apaguají. These stands are described as important for the conservation of characteristic animal species. Cerro Apaguají, Laguna Volcánica and La Cueva are named as destinations for adventurous visitors. Together with the viewpoints, they show the different ways in which nature and scenery can take centre stage in the Municipio.
The Shared Reserva Natural Tisey-Estanzuela

Visitor attractions in the protected area include the Parque Ecológico, tourist trails through forest fragments and agricultural activities.
