Yangon combines colonial-era architecture with several ways to experience the city in motion. In the city centre, you can explore the colonial-era buildings on foot; the Yangon Circular Railway gives visitors insights into the everyday lives of city residents, while river cruises offer a different perspective on waterways and buildings. The Yangon City Heritage List adds religious buildings, old pagodas and British colonial buildings to this picture. This lets you shape your trip around the city’s history, religious sites and everyday life.

Colonial-era buildings and pagodas

The city centre is best explored on foot; Yangon has numerous colonial-era buildings to discover. The Yangon City Heritage List includes almost 200 buildings, among them religious buildings, old pagodas and British colonial buildings. This gives you a choice: you can explore the city’s history through its British colonial buildings or focus on religious buildings and old pagodas. Notable pagodas in Yangon include Mae La Mu, Koe Htet Kyi, Swal Daw, Ngar Htat Gyi, Arr Lein Ngar Sint and Mindama; Kabar Aye Pagoda is one of the city’s sacred sites.

City life by rail and from the water

The Yangon Circular Railway offers a different perspective. Visitors can travel along the 46-kilometre route, which provides insights into the everyday lives of city residents. The two ways of exploring the city offer a clear contrast: a walk through the city centre focuses on colonial-era buildings, while the train journey reveals urban life along the route.

The view changes again on the water: Yangon river cruises take you along the city’s waterways. They offer a different perspective on the lighthouse on the Twante Canal and the Shwedagon Pagoda. Early morning and the final hours of the day are considered particularly suitable times for these trips. If a river cruise is an important part of your plans, check in advance whether one is available on your travel dates.

Parks and markets as additional highlights

People’s Park lies west of the Shwedagon Pagoda and offers, among other things, a water fountain show and a planetarium. If the show or planetarium is important to your visit, check current availability in advance. Bogyoke Market is considered Yangon’s most popular market and has more than 2,000 shops. Its size makes it a destination in its own right if you would also like to discover Yangon through its markets.

Choose the right location for your trip

When looking for a holiday apartment in Yangon, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Would you like to centre your trip on the city centre and its colonial-era architecture, which you can explore on foot, or also include the railway, market, park, pagodas and river cruise? Consider the city centre when choosing a location if you plan to explore a lot of it on foot. If you have a varied itinerary, compare the apartment’s location with the destinations that matter to your trip.
