Fehendhoo: Beaches, Reefs and Island Experiences
Accommodation in Fehendhoo
Fehendhoo combines a jungle-covered island, bays, white-sand beaches and a house reef that can be reached directly from the shore. The beaches are ideal for leisurely walks. Two Bikini Beaches provide convenient reference points: one is near the village, and the other is at the island’s westernmost end. The westernmost beach is considered a place to watch the sunset. Beach conditions can vary by season; confirm names and access locally.
Reefs and Water Sports Around Fehendhoo
Direct access to the house reef makes it a special starting point for reef enthusiasts, but this does not mean conditions are calm: strong currents can occur close to shore and at the ends of the island. Check local conditions before entering the water. The surrounding region also offers a point of reference: the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve encompasses one of the largest groups of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. The atoll’s reefs are home to around 250 coral species and 1,200 species of reef and reef-associated fish.
Fehendhoo is home to the Atoll Aqua Blue diving and water sports centre, which offers activities including scuba diving and kayaking. Aqua Blue Fehendhoo is designated as a PADI Dive Resort, S-26436. An area for confined-water practice is located 15 metres from Aqua Blue Fehendhoo. Services and facility details may change; confirm the operator’s status and current options before booking.
Excursions with Different Highlights
Fishing also varies by time of day and method: a morning trolling trip for wahoo is offered, while static reef fishing at sunset is another option. There is also the guided Turtle, Dolphin and Manta Safari. Its name describes the excursion, not a guaranteed sighting.
A full-day tour from Fehendhoo combines reef snorkelling, time to relax on a sandbank and visits to nearby inhabited islands. Check availability in advance for this tour. Fehendhoo also provides access to the dive sites Fehendhoo Caves, whose underwater tunnels fit the name, and Madivaru Corner. Fehendhoo Caves is an accessible dive site, not a place name for the island itself.
An excursion to Innafushi takes you to an uninhabited island with a lagoon where turtles are often seen. If you prefer to stay on land, you could consider a small fish farm where fish are bred for aquariums. Check in advance whether a visit to the farm is possible. Several beach areas are maintained specifically for tourists; their facilities may change.
Getting There and Choosing the Right Holiday Rental
As a guide for your journey: a shared speedboat from Malé to Fehendhoo typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Schedules and connections may change; check them before travelling.
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide how you want to spend your days. Would you like to leave most of your stay free for beach walks and watching the sunset at the westernmost beach, or do you want to plan dives, kayaking and boat trips?
