Ambositra lies in the Madagascar Highlands and is known for fine marquetry and the Zafimaniry people’s traditional craftsmanship. This craft is evident not only in finished works: the techniques and cultural significance of marquetry are also among the experiences that can shape a stay here.

Discover marquetry

The Petit Musée de la Marqueterie was founded to preserve and promote Ambositra’s traditional marquetry. It highlights the meticulous work of the artisans and conveys the cultural and historical significance of this art. An exhibition of finished marquetry products adds to the insight into the craft techniques. The museum is also designed as a place for exchange and discovery.

During a visit, you can watch artisans at work and learn about their techniques. With the help of a master craftsperson, you can also make your own wooden key ring. Allow no more than an hour for this museum visit. The on-site restaurant serves Malagasy dishes made with local and seasonal ingredients, making craftsmanship and cuisine two different aspects of this place to visit.

Idom Art Studio also welcomes travellers interested in discovering marquetry and the artisans’ skills. Works created there include portraits, landscapes, scenes of Malagasy life, and posters. Unique finished souvenirs and personalised commissions are available. The studio is in the Vohidahy neighbourhood, near Hotel Anjara.

Culture and places in Ambositra District

A renovated royal palace stands on a hill southwest of Ambositra. Famadihana, the ceremony of turning the dead, is considered a cultural experience in Ambositra. Savika is regarded as a traditional sport in Ambositra District, in which participants try to tame raging bulls. These traditions offer a different perspective on the region from its workshops and exhibitions.

The Faliarivo Tapia Forest in Ambositra District is managed by the local community association Maitsovolo. It is one of the most intact and best-preserved Tapia forests. Those interested in the landscape and community involvement will find a different focus here from the crafts in town.

Antoetra is considered the oldest Zafimaniry village. A walking trail leads through hilly landscapes and offers views of rice fields cultivated together by many villagers. Zafimaniry-style woodworking workshops are also considered worth visiting. The Antoetra circuit is a one-week trekking route from Antoetra to Ranomafana National Park in the Vatovavy region. It is therefore quite different from the short walk you can take directly in Ambositra.

Getting around on foot and finding your way

A circular route of about 1.5 kilometres can be walked around Ambositra’s central hill. It offers a way to explore the town on a loop if you have a shorter stay. The colourful Anjoma-Akona market in Ambositra District takes place every Friday. If you plan to visit the market and walk around town, consider Ambositra as your destination when choosing a holiday rental; for the week-long trek, by contrast, Antoetra is the main starting point.

Soatanana, a centre of Malagasy crafts, lies near Ambositra. There you can learn about the processing of wild silk from cocoon to finished product, including boiling, spinning, dyeing, and weaving. Soatanana is on National Road 7. Ambositra itself lies about 90 kilometres beyond Antsirabe, along a route with winding, narrow roads—a useful consideration when planning your journey.

For further orientation in the area, you can also include Ivato in your travel plans. Whether you choose Ambositra for its marquetry, a short walk around town, or the landscapes and trails near Antoetra, tailor your holiday rental search to the kind of travel experience you want to focus on.
