Hiking trails and industrial history
Planning a trip to Mantasoa can begin with two different themes: the circular hiking trails for visitors and its industrial history. Historic buildings add to this picture with their varied forms, materials and associations. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether your stay should focus more on outdoor activities, architecture or the history of production.
The Office Régional du Tourisme d’Analamanga created and marked three circular hiking trails for visitors in Mantasoa; they were inaugurated on 2 September 2022. If you include one of these trails in your plans, it is a good idea to check the conditions before your visit. This gives you a specific, dated hiking idea for your trip, alongside the historical themes.
The industrial workers’ settlement of Soatsimanampiovana was built by Jean Laborde. It was the first in Madagascar where iron, cast iron, gunpowder, glass, soap and earthenware pots were made. This range includes very different materials and objects, bringing the settlement’s production history to life. For visitors interested in culture, it offers a distinct way to explore Mantasoa’s history: the focus is not only on buildings, but also on the goods made here.
Buildings at the Ancien site industriel de Mantasoa
Jean Laborde’s residence at the Ancien site industriel de Mantasoa was built in the mid-19th century. The rectangular building is made of rosewood (Dalbergia), has a four-sided roof of the “voriloha” type and a wide veranda. It was built in the authentic style of Auch, Laborde’s region of origin. The combination of its floor plan, materials, roof and veranda gives the architectural description a clear character; the connection to Auch adds a biographical perspective on his origins.
The Soamandrakizay tomb is also located at the Ancien site industriel de Mantasoa. It is square and designed in the Hindu style. Ten rounded columns support 72 balusters; each side is faced with twelve rows of dressed stone. These features make the tomb’s structure easy to picture. Comparing it with the rectangular residence, the two buildings can be distinguished by their floor plans and architectural elements: rosewood and a veranda in one case, columns, balusters and stone facing in the other.
The Ancien site industriel also includes the Queen’s Bath, attributed to Ranavalona I. The basin is made of dry stone masonry and lime mortar. This adds another building, with its own historical attribution and a different combination of materials, to the descriptions of the residence and tomb.
Choosing Mantasoa to suit your travel interests
When choosing a holiday rental in Mantasoa, you can consider the kind of trip you are planning. The circular hiking trails offer a focus on outdoor activities, while Soatsimanampiovana and the buildings described above provide different ways to explore the history of production and architecture. This comparison can help you match the destination to your holiday interests before choosing your accommodation in Mantasoa.
