Bissau brings together memorial sites, the history of human rights work and a harbor whose mornings were described in 2018 as full of activity and sensory impressions. There is also the cathedral dating from 1945 and a view of the mouth of the Geba River. Historical memory, architecture and harbor atmosphere give the city several distinct thematic perspectives.

Amura Fortress: Burial Sites and Access

The mausoleum of Amílcar Cabral is located inside Amura Fortress. His remains were interred there in 1975. A monument to the national heroes also stands within the fortress; independence fighters buried there include Titina Silá, Francisco Mendes, Osvaldo Vieira and Pansau na Isna. This place therefore brings together Cabral’s mausoleum and the graves of other fighters known by name, along with different forms of commemoration.

In 2018, entering Amura Fortress required a formal written application in advance because of its military status and restricted access. If you are considering a visit, check the current regulations beforehand.

Casa dos Direitos: The Changing History of a Place

In 2018, Casa dos Direitos was housed in a former police station and prison that had been converted into the headquarters of the Guinean-Bissau Human Rights League and other non-governmental organizations. It had a library, a resource center and spaces for exhibitions and debates. There was also a permanent exhibition of photographs documenting the prison’s transformation into a center for the protection of human rights. The building’s former use and its later function thus stand side by side.

Pidjiguiti: Remembrance at the Harbor

The event known as the Pidjiguiti massacre is considered one of the most significant moments in Guinea-Bissau’s liberation struggle. On the square in front of the harbor stands the large fist sculpture “Mão de Timba”; images commemorating the massacre can be seen on a wall in the square. At the harbor entrance are monuments to the martyrs of the massacre of August 3, 1959.

In 2018, the harbor at Pidjiguiti was shaped in the morning by lively activity and a variety of sounds, smells and colors. Pidjiguiti is therefore notable both for the memory of a defining event and for the sensory atmosphere of a harbor.

Architecture and Views in Bissau

Bissau Cathedral dates from 1945 and was designed by architect João Simões. Its date and architect offer a concrete way to explore the city through its architecture—one distinct from the memorial sites at Amura Fortress and the harbor.

From Avenida 3 de Agosto, you can see the mouth of the Geba River, the harbor and Ilhéu do Rei, which lies opposite Bissau. At the same time, the road is in poor condition and is often occupied by heavy goods vehicles waiting to be processed at the harbor. This practical limitation is also part of the view and something you can take into account when planning.
