Kartong brings together a range of travel interests: a sacred crocodile pool, contemporary art, nature experiences and beach access from the northern end of the village. From there, an access route leads directly to the beach. When looking for a holiday rental in Kartong, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on: should your stay mainly include culture around Folonko and the art gallery, or would you also like to make time for birdwatching, a canoe trip or a visit to the beach? These interests offer practical guidance when choosing where to stay.

Folongko: Sacred Pool and Gallery Forest

Folongko in Kartong is one of The Gambia’s three sacred crocodile pools. The Folonko Pool, also known as Mama Folonko Sacred Shrine and Museum, lies southwest of the village and is managed by the Jaiteh family. This brings cultural significance and a distinctive landscape together in one place.

The site covers about 1.12 hectares. At its centre is a pond with a radius of 10 metres, surrounded by gallery forest. These measurements describe two different scales: the radius refers to the central pond, while the hectare figure refers to the larger site. This makes it possible to distinguish the small focal point from the surrounding forest.

Art and Conservation

The artistic range of the Lemonfish Art Gallery extends from exhibitions of contemporary African paintings and sculptures to other works by Gambian and other West African artists. It also includes pottery and batik classes, as well as African films. Viewing, hands-on crafts and film are all offered here. If you would like a class or screening to be a highlight of your stay, check in advance what is currently on offer.

Another way to connect with nature can be found in the conservation work of the Kartong Bird Observatory. It works with non-governmental organisations, bird ringers, naturalists and birdwatchers to protect the Kartong Wetlands. This collaborative conservation work is a distinct aspect of Kartong, alongside the activities visitors can enquire about through the KART Visitor Centre.

Guided Tours, Mangroves and Reptiles

The KART Visitor Centre can arrange local birdwatching tours, dugout canoe trips through the mangroves and guided bush walks. The options are quite distinct: you can focus on birdwatching, a trip on the water or a walk. If a particular activity is important to your plans, ask the Centre directly about current availability.

The reptile centre, considered a conservation area, is just outside Kartong. Reptiles visitors can see up close there include Nile monitors, agamas, tortoises, crocodiles and Senegal chameleons. Check whether access is currently possible before planning a visit. This lets you include wildlife watching as a separate option alongside the tours on offer.

A Look at the West Coast Region

The West Coast Region also offers other natural and cultural highlights. The Tanji River Bird Reserve lists 259 bird species from 61 families. At Tanji Fishing Village, visitors can watch fish being processed and visit the fresh fish market, which takes place daily from early morning. These examples offer distinct experiences: bird diversity is the focus at the reserve, while the village is about fish processing and the market. If you plan to visit the market, it is worth confirming the schedule in advance.
