Volovec combines a distinct focus on the mountains with a cultural and historical theme at the local history museum. Several hikes specify distance, elevation gain and duration, allowing you to compare routes using concrete figures. When planning a holiday apartment in Volovec, it helps to set a simple priority: should your stay focus mainly on hiking, or are you also interested in the museum’s collection?

Signposted trails from Volovec

Signposted tourist trails lead from the railway and bus stations in Volovec to Polonyna Borzhava, the watershed ridge and Mount Boz’ovo. This gives you several specific destinations to choose from for day trips. When planning your days, you can first decide whether you want to head for a polonyna, a ridge or a mountain. The hikes to Temnatyk, Plai and Baz’ovo can also be compared using their route details.

Compare hikes by time and elevation gain

A route from Volovec to Temnatyk (1,343 m) runs through the Volivchyk River valley. It is 9 km long, has an elevation gain of 844 m and takes 3 to 4 hours. The hike to Plai (1,330 m), which also runs through the Volivchyk Valley, is 7 km long; its elevation gain is 830 m and it takes 3 hours. This makes the Plai route 2 km shorter. Its stated duration is at the lower end of the Temnatyk range, while its elevation gain is only 14 m less. The comparison shows that a shorter distance does not automatically mean considerably less elevation gain here.

Another hiking route goes via Mount Baz’ovo from Volovec and back to Volovec. It starts at Yabluniv railway station, is 11 km long, takes 4 hours and has an elevation gain of 595 m. At 11 km, it is the longest of these three hikes, but its elevation gain is lower than that of the two routes through the Volivchyk Valley. This lets you factor distance, time and elevation gain into your plans separately.

Other trails, getting there and Podobovets

A section of the Transcarpathian Tourist Trail runs from the Uzhok Pass via the Verchowyna watershed ridge, Mount Pikui, Bilasovytsia and the Srednii-Veretskyi Pass to Volovets railway station. This section’s trail markings were updated in 2019. Before setting out, check current trail conditions for the hikes mentioned and along this section.

For travel by road, the described route follows the Kyiv–Chop highway to the traffic police checkpoint in Nyzhni Vorota; from there, follow the signs to Volovec. The nearby village of Podobovets is 12 km from Volovets railway station. It has ski and snowboard runs with a total length of 2,500 m. If you want to include the runs in your trip plans, check in advance whether they are currently operating.

The local history museum’s collection

The local history museum in Volovec contains 195 household items, 13 old icons and 18 rare books dating from 1904 to 1944. It also holds 35 handwritten chronicles about settlements, institutions, organisations and notable figures from the Volovets region, as well as numerous photographs and documents. Everyday objects sit alongside religious images and written records in the collection. This gives the museum a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside the mountain hikes, and offers travellers interested in the region another subject to consider when planning their trip.

Set your accommodation search priorities

When looking for a holiday apartment in Volovec, you can first weigh up how much of your trip you want to devote to hiking, a visit to the runs in Podobovets and the museum collection. The different route figures help you plan hiking days by distance, time and elevation gain; the runs in Podobovets add ski and snowboard options.
