Shayan combines the spa resort’s mineral water tradition with distinctive forest and mountain experiences. At the entrance to the spa resort of Shayan stands the sculpture “Drop of Shayan,” which symbolizes Shayan’s mineral water. The sculpture offers a fitting introduction to exploring the town: mineral water is available at the drinking pavilion and is also part of the townscape. At the same time, the slopes of the Shaian and Shaanykha mountains invite you to add nature experiences to your stay.

Forests on the slopes of Shaian and Shaanykha

Centuries-old oak forests, as well as beech-hornbeam forests, have been preserved on the slopes of both mountains. There are also natural forest stands and quasi-primeval forests. These natural areas have been preserved relatively close to developed areas. Those interested in different types of forest will find, alongside the old oaks, beech-hornbeam stands and quasi-primeval forests as distinct features of the landscape.

Marked trails and a summit destination

Two marked hiking routes start at the mineral water drinking pavilion in Shaian: one goes around Mount Shaian and climbs to its summit, while the other is the short Shaian Ring walking trail. The Shaian Ring is 4.5 kilometres long. The slopes of Mount Shaian are quite steep; a signposted path leads to the summit from its northwest side. This gives you a choice between a short walk and a route with a summit destination, each offering a different kind of experience.

At the information board in Shaian, you will find a map and basic information. QR codes let you download routes to a smartphone. There are signposts along the way, the routes are marked, and “forest furniture” provides places to rest along the trail. Maps, digital routes and signs offer different ways to navigate while planning and on the trail. If you are planning a hike, you can check the current trail conditions before setting out.

View abandoned mine tunnels from a distance

The low mountains and forests of Shaian contain abandoned mine tunnels that can be reached via walking trails. They make for an unusual sight: on the slopes, they look like giant beehives. However, you should not enter the underground areas; this is not recommended because it is dangerous. Instead, view the tunnels from a distance. That way, their striking shapes can be part of your walk without venturing into dangerous areas.

Experience the mineral water and choose the right base

You can sample mineral water at the central drinking pavilion in the village of Shaian. Check its current availability locally. Another mineral water drinking pavilion is located on the grounds of the “Shayan” sanatorium and can be used by visitors; access may depend on the sanatorium’s rules. The “Shayanska” mineral water is also served at the sanatorium.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Shayan, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the marked trails and wooded slopes, or the mineral water experiences. You can then compare the specific accommodation options with your own plans. This way, you can choose your base based on the experiences you want to prioritize, rather than on a general idea of the spa resort.
