Shostka combines the history of a city with a long industrial timeline and a range of cultural themes. The Shostka State Museum of Local Lore has been housed in a former Communist Party city committee building since 1993. The building was constructed in 1957. The building’s construction and the start of its use as a museum therefore coincide with two dates that offer a concrete starting point for exploring the city’s history.

Museums, Literature, and City History

The museums focus on different subjects. A former exhibition at the Museum of Local Lore was dedicated to Mykola Neplyuev, a prominent figure of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and founder of the Khrestovozdvyzhenskoho trudovoho bratstva. In 2013, the Panteleimon Kulish Museum in Shostka was described as a repository for original and copied manuscripts by the writer. This adds literature and figures from the city’s history to its architectural heritage.

Other cultural events are also associated with a specific year: the city’s 2018 cultural program included a visit to the exhibition at the «Rodynna pam’iat» memorial and educational complex. A city cultural listing from the same year included guided tours of the «Muzei I.M.Kozheduba» department of the Museum of Local Lore. If you would like to include these activities in your plans, check the latest information about exhibitions and tours in advance.

Industrial History on the Former Factory Site

The site of the former gunpowder factory in Shostka contains architectural heritage from several centuries. A wooden factory building from the 18th century has been preserved. The RMZ building complex, formerly called «Delovoy dvor», and the historic «Krupetska zastava Shostenskoho porokhovoho zavodu» date from the 19th century. The brick guardhouse is also part of the site; it was built in 1834.

Later buildings extend this timeline: a water tower designed by Shukhov, dating from the 1910s, stands on the former factory site, and the central factory laboratory dates from 1916. The «Bumfabriki» building dates from between the 19th and 20th centuries. «Mala kinoplivka» operated in Building No. 348 from 1929 to 1931. A technical installation by Niselman dates from the 1930s. The historic industrial architecture spans from the 18th-century wooden building to 20th-century technical installations.

Buildings and Memorials in the City

There are also various historical landmarks outside the former factory site. The House of Culture at 38 Svobody Street, built in 1932, is considered an example of Soviet Constructivism. The Sviato-Volodymyrska tserkva is registered as a locally significant architectural monument and is considered the only old church building in Shostka to be fully preserved.

The Glory Obelisk is part of the city’s local history of remembrance: it was erected beside a group of mass graves in 1967, stands 6.5 meters high, and is registered as a locally significant historical monument. An eternal flame was also lit when it was erected. Shostka’s buildings, memorial sites, and museums represent different themes and periods in the city’s history.

Cultural Highlights to Help Plan Your Trip

When choosing a holiday apartment in Shostka, your personal interests can help guide you: are you mainly interested in the former factory site’s long architectural and technological history, or are museums, literature, and local figures more important to you? These subjects are quite different, but they are all part of the city’s cultural history.
