Riverside Setting and 19th-Century Churches

Kryve Ozero lies on the Kodima River, a tributary of the Southern Bug. Its riverside location places the town geographically, while its churches add a layer of architectural history. The Church of Saint Paraskeva dates from 1818, and the Roman Catholic Church of St. Louis from 1819. The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God is an architectural monument dating from 1824. Its new brick church was built at a different site at that time. The sequence from 1818 to 1824 provides a concise timeline for the architectural history of these churches. If you are interested in historic architecture, Kryve Ozero offers several clearly dated points of interest.

A Museum Spanning Regional History and Collections

The Kryvoozerskyi Historical Museum is housed in a former home of the merchant Kreimholtz, dating from the mid-19th century. Here, a historic building meets a collection with regional ties. In 2014, the museum exhibition comprised eight halls. Its themes ranged from the distant past of the region to the revolutionary movement of 1905–07 and the events of 1918–20, as well as the 1930s. Other halls covered the beginning of the Second World War, the underground resistance during the war, commemoration, and Kryvoozershchyna from the 1960s through to the present day at the time. The layout linked clearly dated periods with commemoration and a regional-historical perspective. The church buildings of 1818, 1819, and 1824 predate the former merchant’s house from the mid-19th century.

In 2014, the museum’s collection comprised more than 5,000 exhibits, compared with about 1,000 in the early 1990s. The collection includes personal belongings of prominent figures from Kryvoozershchyna, as well as documents, photographs, Soviet awards, old coins, and paper money. It also includes clothing, embroidered towels, and household items. The collection additionally features embroidered portraits of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Taras Shevchenko, and Lesya Ukrainka, along with traditional Boyko clothing and musical instruments. The collection thus spans political and regional history as well as everyday objects, textiles, and music.

The museum’s program included meetings with well-known personalities, as well as events for commemorative days, local history lessons, and literary sessions. If you would like to include a specific format in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently being offered.
