Bucha offers several different points of interest: an expansive city park, a theatrical history associated with Mikhail Bulgakov, and memorial sites with specific historical connections. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which of these aspects interests you most.

City Park: Landscape and Recreation

Bucha’s city park covers 52 hectares and opened in 2011. Lakes, fountains, sculptures and cycle paths shape the grounds. There is also a high-ropes course and a French courtyard. The park thus brings together natural features and landscaped areas. If green spaces and cycle paths are a priority when planning your trip, you can make the city park an important point of reference for your stay in Bucha. The lakes and fountains give the grounds a different character from the sculptures and courtyard, while the cycle paths add an active element.

Bucha’s Theatrical History

Bucha originated in 1901 as a stopping point during construction of the Kyiv–Kovel railway line. Another aspect of the town’s history is the summer theatrical performances on the veranda of the Murashko summer house. The young Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov took part there first as an actor and later as a director. The summer house stood on the site of today’s boarding school. These two connections offer different historical perspectives: the stopping point tells the story of Bucha’s origins in connection with railway construction, while the veranda reflects its cultural life.

The renovated historic landscape park of the Bulgakov estate is also part of this cultural heritage. Events were held there as part of the International Theatre Festival. Together with the earlier performances on the veranda, the festival offers another point of reference for Bucha’s theatrical history.

Places of Remembrance in Bucha

A memorial installation unveiled in Bucha on 2 July 2023 contains the names of 501 identified civilians. On the grounds of the Church of St Andrew the Apostle, the First-Called, and All Saints, there is a memorial plaque bearing the names of Bucha residents who died. The installation and the plaque have different focuses: one names identified civilians, while the other commemorates deceased residents.

A mass grave containing 116 bodies was also discovered on the church grounds. The church is part of an official remembrance route in Kyiv Oblast. Bucha was also among the areas traversed by the first official remembrance route in the oblast. If you would like to include a route in your plans, check the latest arrangements before your visit.

Bucha as a Starting Point for Your Trip

The city park, theatrical history and places of remembrance offer different themes for a stay. If you would especially like to focus on the landscape and cycle paths, the city park is an obvious point of reference. Cultural history and memorial sites offer other focal points. These differences can help you match Bucha to your travel interests and choose a holiday apartment in Bucha as a base that suits your plans for each day.
