Khmelnytskyi: Museums, City Tours and Parks
Accommodation in Khmelnytskyi
Khmelnytskyi can be explored through a variety of trails: one is dedicated to independently visiting ten museums, while walking tours take in the architecture of the historic centre and tell the story of Proskuriv and urban commerce. There are also exhibitions of Ukrainian art and photography, as well as activities at M. Chekman Park. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether museums and city history, or also park activities and water recreation, are part of your planned itinerary.
Museums and City Walks to Suit Your Interests
The “10 Museums in One Line” route is designed for independent exploration of Khmelnytskyi and is recommended to tourists and residents alike. One of its stops is the Museum of City History. There, visitors can take photos with the exhibits, touch them and listen to information about the exhibition through a multilingual audio guide. Check the current service conditions and details for each venue before your visit.
For architecture enthusiasts, the 1.5-hour walking tour “Romance of Proskuriv Art Nouveau” introduces notable and popular cultural heritage buildings in the historic city centre. The route passes through several streets near the pedestrian zone. A shorter, one-hour alternative is the tour “In Search of the Medieval Fortress of Proskuriv”: it takes the form of a puzzle walk and leads to places where fortifications dating from the 16th to 18th centuries are believed to have stood. The two routes therefore differ both in duration and in whether architecture or a search for clues takes centre stage.
“Heart of the City” also lasts one hour and follows Proskurivska Street. If one of the museums of art, city history or photographic art is included, the tour takes an additional 30 minutes. The “Commercial Proskuriv” route takes one hour along Hrushevskoho Street and focuses on the history of commerce, industry and educational institutions. These topics offer different ways to shape a day in the city: you can focus on architecture, explore the history of Proskuriv or turn your attention to the city’s economic and cultural life.
Art, Photography and City History
The Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum is dedicated to contemporary Ukrainian art. The Museum-Studio of Photographic Art features the permanent exhibitions “Photographers of Proskuriv from the Late 19th to the Early 20th Century” and “Old-New City.” The photographs show notable places, houses, streets and cityscapes from the past and present. The Khmelnytskyi Museum-Studio of Photographic Art is described as the first and only museum of its kind in Ukraine.
Another permanent exhibition at the Museum of Photographic Art focuses on historical photographic equipment: it features almost all cameras mass-produced in the Soviet Union, as well as numerous cameras from international manufacturers. The exhibition spans the period from the late 19th century to the digital age. Taken together, the two permanent exhibitions offer different ways to explore the city: one through its photographed views, the other through the equipment that has changed the art of photography.
Park Trails and Water Recreation
A city tour description dated 2 May 2025 presents the 40-minute walk “In Search of the Castle of Proskuriv.” It follows the riverside path and passes through M. Chekman Park. Along the way, it explores the settlement of Proskuriv, an old crossing, the riverside neighbourhoods and the origins of today’s park. This gives the walk a different focus from the one-hour puzzle walk to the supposed fortifications: it combines the park and riverside path with themes from the city’s history.
M. Chekman Park also has a seasonal Ferris wheel, from which you can see the city from above. It is advisable to check whether it is currently operating before your visit. The animal area is home to around 140 animals, including bears, raccoons, birds, rodents, emus, miniature pigs, peacocks and foxes; the animal population may change. Water recreation options in Khmelnytskyi include catamarans, a motorboat and water balls. Check in advance which activities are currently operating.
Find the Right Holiday Apartment for Your Plans
The activities described appeal to a range of interests: museum visits and photography, walks focused on architecture or history, and time in the park and water recreation. Use the experiences you plan to enjoy to guide your search for a holiday apartment.
