Khorly’s story unfolds through its history as a harbor, garden and park art, and small islands near the peninsula. A festival of spiritual and patriotic songs is also part of the area’s event history. These bring together different themes: economic development, landscaped parkland, and a cultural events scene. If you like to plan your vacation around these kinds of local connections, they can shape how you see Khorly. When looking for a holiday rental, it is helpful to first consider which focus you want to shape your stay.

The harbor and its history

Sofia Bohdanivna Falts-Fein founded the port of Khorly on the shore of Karkinitska Bay in 1897. It was intended to facilitate the export of agricultural produce abroad and oversee its shipment. Shortly after its founding, piers and quays, ship docks, warehouses, a grain silo, a harbor office, and an oyster-processing factory were built there. The historical development can thus be seen in two stages: first came the harbor and its role in exports, followed by additional buildings and facilities. The different parts of the site give the harbor’s history a concrete economic context, from storing agricultural produce to processing oysters.

Park ensembles and an artwork at the former harbor

The decorative sculpture “Kupalnytsia” stands on the site of the former harbor. It serves as a distinctive point of connection between the harbor’s history and garden and park art in Khorly. The northeastern park ensemble has been preserved; the southern ensemble, by the sea, has also been partially preserved. The latter is divided into separate areas. The two park areas therefore differ both in their location and in how much of them has been preserved. Khorly is also home to garden and park art monuments of local significance. The park theme is not limited to one place or one work, but forms part of the destination’s broader cultural character.

Islands and event history

Small islands near the Khorly Peninsula are considered uninhabited and are associated with large nests of wild birds. This landscape offers a different focus from the harbor and parks: here the emphasis is on islands and birdlife, while there it is on historical development and designed spaces. Since 2006, the interregional festival of spiritual and patriotic song “Soniachni dzvony” has been held in August in the village of Khorly, in what was then Kalanchak Raion. For travelers interested in culture and regional traditions, the festival’s history adds an events dimension to the area’s architectural and landscape themes. If a festival date is important to your travel plans, check current event listings.

Understanding Khorly as a vacation destination

The themes can be easily distinguished when planning your trip: the harbor, sculpture, and garden and park art form the cultural and historical focus; the nearby islands and their birdlife add a landscape element. The festival’s history is also part of the area’s cultural character, though it is recorded as a past event. Before looking for a holiday rental, you can consider which of these perspectives matters most to your stay. If you mainly want to explore the harbor and park history, your focus will differ from that of someone interested in the islands. Khorly’s local history can thus be explored through several themes rather than being reduced to a single attraction.
