Uman: Parkland and City History
Accommodation in Uman
Uman offers a range of themes for a stay: the extensive parkland of Sofiyivka, the city's cultural sites, and a distinctive pilgrimage tradition. The aspect that interests you most can also be the first filter in your search for a vacation rental in Uman.
Parkland with a variety of experiences
Near Uman is the Sofiyivka National Dendrological Park, a 180-hectare landscape park. Water, earth, rocks, and plants are part of its design, along with architectural structures and sculptures. This combination shapes the character of the park as a designed landscape. Sofiyivka is the largest center for the introduction and acclimatization of plants in the forest-steppe zone on the right bank of the Dnieper in Ukraine. The park includes more than 3,000 plant taxa; this number may change over time.
Activities include carriage rides and horseback rides accompanied by a riding instructor. On the Upper Pond (Verkhniy Stavok), you can take a ride in a boat, pedal boat, or the Sofiya ship. Another boating experience takes you along the underground Acheron River from the Amsterdamskyi Shlyuz to Acherontiyske Lake. The rides thus differ in setting: a body of water in the park or an underground river route with named starting and ending points. At Zvirynets, visitors can observe animals from an observation platform.
If you are traveling with young children or find longer walks difficult, you can cross the park in an electric vehicle; a guided tour is also available. This is a separate way to get around, in addition to the carriage, water, and horseback riding options.
City history and cultural heritage
The Stara Uman State Historical and Architectural Reserve covers 82 hectares in the historic part of Uman. It currently includes 68 cultural heritage sites. These include the nationally significant architectural monuments Torhovi Riady (Ratusha) and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The reserve thus provides a setting for considering the city's diverse architectural and cultural connections together.
Construction of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary began in 1780 on the grounds of an old Polish cemetery. Today, it houses the city art gallery, which has been located there since March 1974 as the art department of the Uman Local History Museum. The State Local History Museum building also has its own history: until 1924, it housed a private hospital built between 1900 and 1902.
In Stara Uman, a staged tour leads through the underground passages of the former Basilian monastery. It brings the past to life through sight, sound, smell, and touch. Advance booking is requested for this tour. It offers a different focus from the buildings and monuments in the reserve: here, the emphasis is on a sensory encounter with history.
Pilgrimage tradition and other historical connections
The grave of Tzadik Nachman in Uman attracts thousands of pilgrims from more than 20 countries every year for Rosh Hashanah. In 1994, a historical and cultural center was established at the grave site by Presidential Decree No. 283/94 of June 7. Alongside its parks and architectural history, Uman thus preserves a religious and cultural focal point that recurs annually. Those planning a stay around Rosh Hashanah are traveling for a specific occasion, distinct from a visit to the parkland or historic sites.
Another historical landmark stands in Uman: Ukraine's only monument to the leaders of the Koliivshchyna uprising of 1768–1769, Ivan Gonta and Maksym Zalizniak. Together with the reserve, the church, and the former private hospital, it shows how the city's history can be explored through places and eras.
For your trip planning, you can begin by choosing a focus: botanical diversity and activities in the park, the city's architectural and museum history, or the pilgrimage tradition around Rosh Hashanah. These interests can guide your search for a vacation rental in Uman without assuming that you need to stay in a particular location.
