The Bex salt mines are the last still-active salt mine in Switzerland. In Bex, the distinctive heritage of the salt mines stands alongside art, winegrowing and paths through the surrounding countryside. After an audiovisual presentation, the miners’ train takes visitors inside the salt mountain of the Bex salt mines.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Bex can select Bex as a destination in its own right.

Culture

The Bex Arts Triennial was founded in 1981 as an exhibition of contemporary art and takes place in Szilassy Landscape Park. At the Triennial, sculptures, installations and performances enter into direct dialogue with the landscape. A tour featuring Bex’s heritage information panels also conveys the history of thermal bathing in Bex-les-Bains.

The Sentier du Sel educational trail connects Salin-sur-Ollon with the Bévieux saltworks near Bex. The salt mines themselves are served by bus route 152: it runs from Bex railway station to the Bex salt mines and operates on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the Monday of the Swiss Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer.

Nature

Almost 3,000 mountain plants grow at La Thomasia, arranged according to their geographical origin. La Thomasia is located at the entrance to the Vallon de Nant nature reserve and is listed under the address CH-1880 Les Plans-sur-Bex.

From Bex, La Thomasia can be reached via Frenières-Sur-Bex and Les Plans. From the end of May to the end of September, bus route 152 runs from Bex to Pont de Nant. Outside this period, the bus goes as far as Les Plans, from where a further 2 km must be covered on foot.

A path in the Vallon de Nant leads to Alp Nant and passes through forests, pastures, alluvial fans and scree slopes. The Les Caillettes glacier mill bears witness to the fact that the Rhône Glacier advanced as far as Bex around 17,000 years ago.

Winegrowing

Bex’s vineyards cover 110 hectares; more than half of this area is planted with red grape varieties. Bex’s winegrowers open their doors for wine tastings.

The Sentier des vignes leads walkers to Bex’s terraced vineyard plots and allows them to discover their produce along the way.

Paths and connections

The BVB takes passengers from Bex to Villars in around 45 minutes.
