Culture and History

St Michael's Church in Raron is a rock church with 500 seats and is described by Valais Tourism as Europe's largest rock church. The medieval castle complex stands on a steep rocky outcrop; archaeological investigations carried out from 1970 to 1972 helped reconstruct its construction history.

In the surrounding area, Blummhorn, Ergischhorn, Augstbordhorn and Ginalshorn are recorded as named mapped mountain features. Their approximate straight-line distances from the mapped centre of Raron District are about 5.3 km to the north, 5.7 km to the southwest, 7.2 km to the south and 8.4 km to the southwest, respectively. Zènèvrec is a named mapped ruin feature about 16.3 km to the west, while Gmeinalp is about 29.8 km southeast of this centre.

A documented mountain hike in the direction of Raron follows old irrigation channels, offers views over the Rhône Valley and includes a detour into the Jolischlucht gorge.

A cultural hiking trail from St. German leads through Raron, past the castle and rock church, and on to Niedergesteln.
