Salgesch lies in central Valais, three kilometres northeast of Sierre on the right-hand side of the Rhône Valley.

The municipality comprises hilly terrain near the Rhône. Its northern mountain slope extends to the lower edge of Varneralp at 2,100 metres above sea level.

Part of the Pfyn Forest belongs to the territory of Salgesch; it is described as the largest contiguous pine forest in the Alps.

The Canton of Valais designated the Pfyn Forest as a protected natural and landscape area on 17 December 1997.

The Rhône flows through the area in a broad natural riverbed with changing gravel banks and extensive alluvial forests.

The hills around the village and in the Rhône Valley were formed by the prehistoric landslide of Salgesch.
